Yeah they also break all battles unfortunately. Game instantly crashes due to them

is there an option to promote normal troops to companions?

I have the same issue. The companion's gear is just mirroring my own, even if I change my own. It also crashes when I start a battle :(

Yes...after a battle if someone has scored multiple kills they may be eligible. After the battle an orange message will show up that says "some of your troops can now be upgraded" (along those lines I can't remember exactly what it says)

you can go into your camp menu (far right button on in the middle of the screen on the bottom) and there is an option to promote them. You can either turn them into a companion, or dismiss them for an XP bonus (they remain a normal unit and all units of the same type get XP).

Promote or give Reward, but not both or crash later i've experienced. Also can't change inventory to the promoted one if also rewarded him (give money 1000-1750, it depends on the type of unit).

Reward I guess is the dismiss thing you talked, right?
