Yes...after a battle if someone has scored multiple kills they may be eligible. After the battle an orange message will show up that says "some of your troops can now be upgraded" (along those lines I can't remember exactly what it says)
you can go into your camp menu (far right button on in the middle of the screen on the bottom) and there is an option to promote them. You can either turn them into a companion, or dismiss them for an XP bonus (they remain a normal unit and all units of the same type get XP).
if you accidentally promote you have to start a new game
Promote or give Reward, but not both or crash later i've experienced. Also can't change inventory to the promoted one if also rewarded him (give money 1000-1750, it depends on the type of unit).
Reward I guess is the dismiss thing you talked, right?
