Capture Class: How to Play (Offical guide)
Capture Class: How to Play
Welcome to the official gameplay guide for the Capture Class! This guide will provide tips and tricks for using this class, including advice oriented towards using it during different stages of the game. Tips have been organized into different categories; check the section titles to find the info you're most interested in! Enjoy!

Notice: This guide was written based on v1.0 of the Capture Class. Some info may be outdated as of new versions (Particularly v1.1)! Major discrepancies between v1.0 and v1.1 have been corrected, though.

Using Capture Discs:
  • Most Capture Discs are crafted, but a few are sold, found in crates/chests, or dropped. Mods like Recipe Browser are highly recommended for helping find Capture Discs, as well as other items from this mod.

  • Once you obtain a Capture Disc, deploy it by holding down the attack button.

  • Your Capture Disc will follow your cursor and leave a colored trail; drawing a closed shape with the trail resets it.

  • To attack enemies, draw a closed shape around them; all enemies inside will be instantly damaged!

Discs’ Limitations:
  • All Discs have an associated multihit penalty, much like Whips do. When attacking multiple enemies, each one will take a bit less damage than the one before, based on this penalty.

  • Stronger Discs have lower multihit penalties, so attacking crowds is still generally effective, especially later in the game.

  • However, attacking enemies outside of your line-of-sight incurs a damage penalty. This penalty is based on the Disc’s multihit penalty (Equal to the multihit penalty applied twice), so stronger Discs are less impacted by this. Furthermore, a few Discs uniquely bypass this penalty.

  • Your Disc will draw its trail no matter where it is on screen; by moving around you can even draw shapes that go off-screen. However, attacking off-screen enemies will cause the LoS penalty to be applied regardless of LoS or the target.

  • There is also a similar, weaker penalty for not fully circling an enemy (i.e. it overlaps the trail instead of being fully inside its shape). Certain Discs have the ability to deal more damage in this scenario, though. Also, bosses don’t invoke this penalty, either.

  • Bosses are not impacted by the aforementioned penalties, due to their size and aggression. Also, enemies that don’t collide with tiles won’t trigger the LoS penalty, either.

  • Discs have a limited trail length, with stronger Discs generally having longer trails than weaker ones. This means the size of the shapes you draw will be restricted, especially during earlygame. Fortunately, certain Capture-related gear and prefixes can boost trail length.

Tips & Tricks:
  • Capture Discs’ DPS is directly dependent on your circling speed; faster circles means more damage.

  • Smaller circles take less time to draw than larger ones; try and draw shapes as small as possible, particularly when focusing on a single target.

  • While Discs have strong crowd control potential and can hit anywhere on screen, their base damage tends to be below average, leading to them lacking in single target DPS.
This is most apparent in many boss fights, so it is advised you prepare well and be ready for longer battles!

  • The use speed of a Disc matters! This stat affects how sharply the Disc follows your cursor, with faster Discs having better handling.
Stronger Discs tend to be faster than weaker ones. If you find your Disc unwieldy, consider boosting its speed (Ex: via. reforge), or looking for a better Disc if possible.

  • Try to explore and collect as many Discs as you can; the vast majority of Discs come with one or more special properties for you to take advantage of.

  • Discs’ attacks always knock enemies away from you; if enemies are approaching from multiple sides, try drawing large circles around yourself to fend off attackers from both sides at once!
Unlike damage, knockback isn’t penalized when striking multiple targets at once, so this strategy remains effective regardless of the Disc and/or number of enemies.

  • The aforementioned technique is also helpful for clearing out incoming projectiles that can be destroyed, like when facing foes such as Expert EoW

  • Various Discs emit light, and certain accessories allow all Discs to. Such Discs are great for revealing hidden caves, treasures, and threats while spelunking!

Quality of Life:
  • Check your controls (In settings) for this mod’s ‘Toggle Disc Auto-Deploy’ hotkey! This can be used to make it so your Disc automatically deploys (and stays deployed) while held, meaning you won’t have to hold the mouse to attack.

  • When using Auto-Deploy, you won’t be able to switch weapons via. scrolling, but using hotbar keys (Typically 1-0) still works. Auto-Deploy can also be disabled while a Disc is in use, if needed.

  • If you find rapidly circling with your Disc straining, check this mod’s config (In settings) and consider using the ‘Capture Damage scales with circling time’ option. This will make your DPS less dependent on circling speed.

  • Furthermore, seek out the post-Golem ‘Dynamo Core’ accessory and/or the post-Mechs ‘Chlorotech Disc’ Capture Disc, which have a similar effect to the aforementioned config and stack with it.

  • In addition to the above points, also consider the ‘Fast Capture Discs’ config option. This will increase the use speed of your Capture Discs, which influences how sharply they follow your mouse (In other words, this increases Discs’ handling, making them easier to use).

Progression-oriented Tips:
The sections below are each oriented towards different parts of the game. Many will provide you with equipment recommendations. These are organized from earlygame to endgame;

Early Pre-Hardmode Tips:
  • The first Disc you can obtain is the Disc on a String, made from wood and cobweb. However, it is the weakest Disc and has terrible handling, so upgrade it into an Enchanted Disc by combining it with fallen stars.

  • Try to obtain Wayfarer Armor - made from Wooden Armor, Silk, and Silver/Tungsten Bars - as soon as possible. It has solid stats, and its set bonus will improve the speed/handling of your Discs, which tends to be poor in the earlygame.

  • Once you have basic gear (see above), aim to craft the Gemtech Disc and/or Silver Lining. The former emits light and is good for revealing caves, while the latter has the unique ability to deal extra damage to enemies touching its trail.
Both are improvements over the Enchanted Disc and should suffice against King Slime and EoC. Check with the Guide (or better, Recipe Browser) for help with crafting Discs
As of v1.1 there are various accessible, viable alternatives to the aforementioned Discs, so keep an eye out as you explore! In fact, this goes for most stages of the game; so keep in mind the recommendations here aren't your only options.

  • If you end up with a Disc with a modifier that reduces its speed, consider re-crafting it (or reforge, if you have the Goblin Tinkerer), as speed reductions will make the Disc handle worse. This is more noticeable on earlier Discs, which tend to handle poorly to begin with.

  • Consider fishing in the Jungle for Neon Tetra, which can be combined with Daybloom and Bottled Water to create Affinity Potions. These boost the speed and trail length of your Discs, which is especially helpful in the earlygame when Discs have low speed and trail length.

Mid Pre-Hardmode Tips:
  • Try to obtain the Goblin Tinkerer before taking on EoW/BoC. In addition to reforging your Discs, the Goblin sells the useful Tinkered Disc and Modified Emitter; a new Disc and accessory, respectively.

  • Once you’re post-EoC, check with the Demolitionist and buy Short Fuse. This unique Disc explodes if its trail reaches it. The blast scales in power as more circles are completed, and its damage isn’t inhibited by the LoS penalty, making it great for attacking from safety.

  • Once you beat the EoW/BoC, the Art Attack - purchased from the Painter in a graveyard - is a great choice for its strong damage output, thanks to its ability to deal extra damage to fully circled targets.
Furthermore, it can be tossed into Shimmer to turn it into the Ruby Star, an accessory which grants a similar effect to all your Discs!

  • Another good choice of Disc is the Wild Vine, made from Jungle materials. In addition to strong stats, it ignores the LoS penalty. If you’re daring and/or skilled enough, the Wild Vine can be obtained pre-boss with an early trip to the Jungle.

  • Beating EoW/BoC also allows you to purchase the Exotic Armor set from the Zoologist, so long as you have enough Bestiary completion (20%). This is a substantial upgrade over Wayfarer Armor, so prioritize it before taking on further bosses.
Once you have the Exotic Headgear, you can throw it into Shimmer in v1.1 or later to obtain the Exotic Hat, a defense-oriented alternative to the Headgear.

Late Pre-Hardmode Tips:
  • Once you’ve beaten Queen Bee, the Party Girl will sell the Party Popper, a strong Disc which creates confetti blasts centered on its Disc with each circle made.
Like with previous, similar effects, these blasts ignore the LoS penalty, allowing Party Popper to replace Wild Vine and/or Short Fuse in your arsenal.

  • Consider bringing some money with you when entering the Dungeon, as the Mechanic will sell Livewire - a new Disc - which you can purchase the moment you rescue her. Livewire has solid stats and a secondary, passive attack, and should prove useful in the Dungeon.

  • When looting in the Dungeon, keep an eye out for the Cursed Binder, another helpful Disc, capable of inflicting a debuff that weakens your opponents. Cursed Binder has better raw stats than Livewire, and has better crowd control thanks to its debuff.

  • The Hot Streak Disc can be made from Hellstone Bars, and is comparable to Cursed Binder in overall strength. Consider taking an early trip to the Underworld once you have a Nightmare/Deathbringer pickaxe in order to take advantage of Hot Streak’s power for longer.

Early Hardmode Tips:
  • In early hardmode the most accessible Discs include the Disc of the Ancients, dropped by the WoF, and the Alloy Disc, made from the early hardmode metals.

  • When mining the early hardmode ores, make sure to pick up some extra ore of each tier, as you’ll be able to craft Alloy Armor by combining the 3 ores’ respective bars. Alloy Armor will grant another large jump in power. As of v1.1, it also has two headpieces to choose from.

  • Other Discs available in early hardmode include the String Spinner, Icing Disc, and Sand Liner. All three of these are crafted, so have the Guide or Recipe Browser help you!
However, this list isn't exhaustive; similar to early pre-hardmode, early hardmode has a pretty large amount of Disc options to find.

  • When deciding which mech boss to fight first, consider Skeletron Prime, whose Souls of Fright can craft the Razoredge Disc, which has the unique ability to deal damage by hitting enemies directly with its disc.
Furthermore, this property makes it extra potent against The Destroyer, as it can be run through all its segments at once.

  • Whichever mech you fight first, you’ll be able to craft the Hallowed Focus, another useful Disc that can boost its damage for a while with a charging mechanic.
Also note that there is a Capture class headpiece for the Hallowed Set, which should be a slight improvement over Alloy.

  • Beating a mechanical boss will also allow you to buy the Disc Charger from the Mechanic. This is a buff-granting furniture/station, so make sure to grab it for the ‘free’ stat perk!

  • Once in hardmode (In v1.1), be on the lookout for a Purity Key, a new biome key rarely dropped by enemies in the pure surface/forest and pure underground/caverns. Once you've beaten Plantera, you'll be able to open the respective Purity Chest for a powerful Capture Disc.

Mid Hardmode Tips:
  • Once you have access to Chlorophyte, there are multiple useful items you can craft from it; the Chlorotech Disc, the Synergy Potion, and a Capture headpiece for the Chlorophyte Set. Give all of these a look before challenging Plantera.

  • Right after beating Plantera, three new Discs are easily available to you; the Overgrowth (Dropped by Plantera), the Supercharger (Sold by Cyborg), and the Aura Tracer (Made from Shroomite and Spectre Bars).
These are all solid boosts to your offense, so make sure you grab at least one (Or better yet, two or three) of these before moving on.

  • After obtaining one of the aforementioned Discs, grind Mothrons in the post-Plantera Solar Eclipse, as they will drop pieces of Ancient Armor; one of two lategame Capture armor sets.

  • Mourning Woods and Everscreams each drop a strong Disc. However, the Capture class struggles with the Pumpkin and Frost Moons - despite its strong crowd control - due to lacking single target DPS against the Moons’ powerful minibosses. Prepare for these events well and approach them with caution when attempting to obtain these Discs!

Late Hardmode Tips:
  • Golem should be an easy opponent since Discs can easily circle all of its parts at once, and is worth grinding for its Solarcell Disc drop. This Disc has the unique ability to fire lasers at nearby targets, granting some auxiliary DPS that is - unlike the Disc itself - capable of hitting off-screen targets.

  • Duke Fishron drops a new Disc; Maelstrom. As with Duke’s other drops, if you can defeat Duke Fishron in early Hardmode and obtain Maelstrom, it is capable of blowing through early and mid Hardmode.
As of v1.1 the Duke also drops a new material - Fishron Scales - which can be combined with Shroomite Bars to make Aquarian Armor, the second lategame Capture armor set.
Regardless of when you get Maelstrom, it should be a powerful asset, but note that its special properties cause it to rely on a fast circling speed to maximize its damage.

  • Once post-Golem, you should challenge the Martian Madness for some Martian Conduit Plating, which can be crafted with Shroomite Bars to make the Dynamo Core. This is a very useful accessory that scales up your Discs’ damage based on how long they take to complete shapes. This effectively allows you to draw shapes slower without losing as much DPS.

  • Note that the Capture class has no respective Lunar Fragment. Instead, it has 4 Lunar Event weapons; one made from each of the vanilla fragments.
In practice, this means you’ll be able to craft a new, powerful Disc regardless of which Lunar Tower you down first, and will have all four at your disposal during the final battle.

How do you obtain the modified emitter? It seems useful but you cant craft it and this doesn't show how.

The Goblin Tinkerer sells it. That is actually mentioned by the guide, it's in the first tip of the 'Mid Pre-Hardmode Tips' section.

Yeah Steam's formatting isn't the best or most customizable, so it just ends up as a big wall of text despite the section headers and the bullet lists...
How the hell do you get the ruby star

It's in this guide, in the Mid Pre-Hardmode Tips;
"Once you beat the EoW/BoC, the Art Attack - purchased from the Painter in a graveyard - is a great choice for its strong damage output, thanks to its ability to deal extra damage to fully circled targets.

It's around 20-25% IIRC. You can also use shimmer to transmute the Capture Emblem into the Disc and vice versa

I collected a full set of hallow armor, but in the description it says Mods.CaptureDiscClass.CommonTooltips.SetBonus.Hallowed, it may be due to the fact that I play in Russian?
(Thankns for your answer)

I think that's actually a bug with the Ancient version of the Capture Class's Hallowed headpiece. There used to be an extra line in addition to the vanilla set bonus, but it doesn't exist anymore. I guess I forgot to remove the line from the Ancient Headpiece.
