Question
I sometimes want to play as a different empire than I spawned in as, is there a way to trigger the selection box manually?

Yes. You can fire the event manually with a console command

The ID for the event is PreSelect.1

What happens if you do this when the event has already fired?
Can you switch selections, or add to existing?

You should be able to add new ones, though you cannot remove already-selected precursors, even if you have not yet gotten the intro event.
You might be unable to enter the preselection settings menu, though.
