Maybe fungus growing on walls / floors as clear indicators that a place is a spore zone
Visible spores? (maybe like how corpses have flies over them after some time)
A method for players to remove it naturally would be good too. For example, a rare aerosol bomb found in military containers. Detonating it inside a zone destroys the zone and produces dense temporary fog, but no fire nor explosion damage.
Also, extra sandbox setting could make it more interesting:

I love the idea of feeding an angry, scorching hot boiler enough wood and water to power machines with a dynamo. From the scorching heat it puts off to the risk of explosion if not operated correctly.
It would be perfect RP material, with a lot of room for chaos.
But tame the flame, and you have a renewable energy source for endgame.
