How to kill an Observer

Finally found an Observer and dumped all the ammo I've had but didn't kill him. Am I doing something wrong? How am I supposed to fight them?

A lotta bullets, i recommend having a lot of ammo and a powerful gun. (a machine gun or even a shotgun would do the trick.)

yeah, looks like that. just tried once again, had Moses with like 2 full boxes of ammo for it, dumped almost everything.

yeah, pretty much. managed to get like 7-10 shots in that glowing square thing on it's back, but it didn't look like it did much damage so idk if that was worth it.
