FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS about 1.666 and 1.333
------------------------ GETTING STARTED ------------------------

Which mod do I choose?
See "how is 1.333 different from 1.666" question somewhere below.

HOW TO INSTALL THE MOD?
1. Subscribe and wait for your Steam to download it.
2. Start the game, in main menu go to Content, Total Conversions, then select this mod and click Activate button.
3. Game will restart.
4. Kindly read all the tips in all option menus.
5. Start a new game and have fun.

If it "doesn't work":
1. See section above.
2. Kindly clarify your issue and see through relevant FAQ sections.

If it "doesn't download":
1. Unsubscribe
2. Restart Steam
3. Subscribe again

If it crashes / freezes / broken / etc:
1. Unsubscribe
2. Restart Steam
3. Subscribe again
4. Verify integrity of game files in Steam.
5. If that did not help - decrease Destructions quality.
5. If that did not help - decrease Details quality in graphics options.
6. If that did not help - decrease every graphics quality options.
7. If that did not help - (re)install your Windows (yes, seriously).
8. If that did not help - sorry to hear that, but nothing else we can do.

See more info in "why does it crash" section below.

How to play VR?
1. Install the mod (see above)
2. Go to Options --> VR setup and follow instructions there.
3. Make sure you didn't forget anything, follow it carefully.

I carefully followed VR setup instructions but it still shows "waiting for setup" label. What to do?
It is either: you forgot one important checkbox; you forgot to click "inject" afterwards; or something broken in the injector itself, in which case I can only advice downloading previous version. Can't help further because I don't have a headset.

----------------------- TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES -----------------------

Why is performance so bad? & How to improve it?
Because the game was not made with traditional first-/third-person perspective in mind and CPU (not GPU) is a bottleneck.

How to improve it:
  • Gradually reduce Detail mode - reduces amount of small objects, this has biggest impact
  • Reduce Shadows quality - but do not turn them off
  • Disable Ambient occlusion
  • Buy a CPU with high single-thread (!) benchmark score

Why does it crash?
There are tons of possible causes but since there are no proper error messages or logs generated by the game - nobody really knows. You can get yourself Unreal Engine sources and debug it yourself. The engine and its Editor are literally full of fkuc-ups. Making stuff using just the Editor is supposed to be fool-proof but it was proven to be false multiple times.

The best you can do is to keep your OS and drivers (that's not only GPU) up to date. Windows 10 works fine, no idea about any other versions.

Are gamepads/controllers supported?
Yes, but we're relying on Unreal Engine to handle this, so don't ask if <insert device name> is supported or not, we don't know and we don't have control over it. If it does not work - that is simply not possible for us to fix it.

Is Linux / Unix / Steam Deck / my uncle Dave's OS supported?
We don't have it / use it so we cannot test it. You have 2 options:
  • Be a man, google your issues, fix them, and report a solution in the comments.
  • Be a man, install Windows as dual-boot and play games like the rest of us.
Also, see question below.

I cannot look around 360°, it does not move past some area, how do I fix it?
Your fullscreen mode is screwed and is not capturing mouse cursor to the center of the screen.
If you're on Windows - no idea, try different fullscreen modes.
If you're on Linux-like system - use compatibility mode with Proton 9.0-3, whatever it means. No idea myself, can't help further. See question above.

I can look around 360° but it is slow, how do I fix it?
If you're using a mouse - adjust sensitivity in the Controls+ menu.
If you're using a controller - adjust sensitivity in the Controls --> Controller menu.
If you're using VR motion controls - no idea, see UEVR settings.

I have a 4K monitor, subtitles are too small, what can I do?
Set smaller resolution and increase resolution scale - e.g. 1080p and 200% scale.

I'm using external cheats, why is everybody immortal now?
External cheats are crap. Use built-in ones. They're unlocked by default in 1.333 and partially locked in 1.666 behind a simple requirement you can find in the cheats menu if you pay a bit of attention.

I installed the mod and my screen flickers // turns black / green / etc while playing
Try using "fullscreen windowed" mode.

------------------------ GAMEPLAY ------------------------

(1.666 only) How do I unlock new maps?
Full list of level unlocks built into the mod:
  • Reaching Train unlocks Truck Stop
  • Reaching Sewers unlocks Home and Marina
  • Reaching Downtown unlocks Army Base, Prison and Rockshield

This custom code relies on built-in unlocking logic that is hidden from modders and that we cannot control. If you see Downtown then you should see at least Prison.

(1.666 only) In Rockshield level, can I skip to the final quest?
No. You must earn it by completing the objectives first.

Are achievements working?
No. Game blocks you from unlocking achievements when you're playing any mod, not just 1.666 or 1.333.

How can I enable original gun sounds?
Unfortunately it was not possible to make an in-game toggle for this and we had to resort to some black magic to make it work. This shouldn't be hard to setup if you can count to 3.
  • Go to this folder: Steam\steamapps\common\Hatred\Hatred\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor
  • Open this file: Engine.ini
  • Add this at the end of the file and save:
[/script/engine.engine] bAllowMatureLanguage=True
That's it. Original sounds will now be used for most common guns except RPG and M240 machine gun. Why? RPG sound is simply better in my personal opinion, and M240 in this mod shoots at faster rate, and I'm too lazy to edit old sound to make it match.

Why do hands/arms look so terrible in first-person?
You're still looking at the third-person model which is not suited at all for proper first-person perspective. That's the best we could achieve. Hire us a full-time game-dev animator if you want it improved.

That's not a joke by the way. But if you're really ready to throw your money (or your time) at this, please coordinate with us first, so your effort is not wasted. Start by posting a comment under any of the mods.

------------------------ MISCELLANEOUS ------------------------

How is 1.333 different from 1.666?
Both mods have same technical foundation (i.e. gameplay changes) but are drastically different in the artistic direction.

1.333 is the vanilla experience:
  • Original black & white palette
  • No changes to the campaign - i.e. no new maps
  • No changes in music
  • No changes in enemies
  • All cheats are unlocked
  • All maps are unlocked

1.666 is the reinterpretation of the campaign:
  • Everything is colored
  • Two new maps after Downtown provide an alternative story finale
  • Slight changes in original maps
  • New music
  • More enemies, tougher firefights - be ready to git gud
  • Most powerful cheats are locked behind progression
  • Maps are locked behind standard progression - we want you to appreciate the goodness we've worked on. See more info below.

The choice is yours.

(1.666 only) Where is the music from?
Most of the tracks are original and composed by Vergil; some others are taken from either Manhunt or Devil May Cry series. See full list here.

(1.666 only) You are sick fkucs, do you know that?
Thank you for playing the mod.

Why was my comment removed?
Thank you for playing the mod.

You either mentioned piracy (see below) or a posted a spoiler about a specific, non-canon part of 1.666. Keep everyone safe and don't mention that part in a way that would make it obvious. Other than that - we don't care.

------------------------ REQUESTS ------------------------

Can you add new maps from 1.666 to 1.333?
No.

The intention is to have different artistic direction. 1.333 is essentially a vanilla game with gameplay changes; 1.666 is a reinterpretation of the story with many changes done for the entertainment purposes of its creator (regardless of your stance on those).

Also, too many technical obstacles to make it happen even if we wanted to. See the question directly below.

Can you add X? or change Y? or fix Z?
No.

Both 1.666 and 1.333 are finished and we're not doing any more changes or fixes. Modding with Unreal Editor is too painful and exhausting due to constant crashes and bugs. Neither of us enjoy modding the game anymore, as it became a constant search for workarounds.

Personally, after seeing the game inside-out and suffering through lots of troubles I no longer even enjoy playing the game. I'm a programmer but I have zero skills in modelling, texturing, animating, making maps etc, so what you currently see in the form of 1.333 is what could be achieved by a single person with a very narrow set of skills and not a lot of free time across 8 years - I started modding in 2016 with the release of the Editor and I'm editing this FAQ in 2024.

1.666 is essentially 1.333 plus a second guy who can make maps and wield Photoshop. There is so much more that could be done, but at this point it requires a whole team of various professionals working full-time to actually push it anywhere further, yet alone not breaking anything that was already done (which happens by itself all the time).

Please don't ask for any changes, it won't be done, sorry.

But you must do X, I demand it!
Yeah well, thanks for playing the mod. Next question please.

Can you share mod's sources?
Short answer is: No, you. *places Uno reverse card*

But in all seriousness, see full answer here.

Can I create a map pack that would use FPS / TPS perspectives?
Yes, you can. See this guide.

Can you share the mods on site X?
Sorry but no.

We're not using Gog / Shmog / Zoom / Skype / whatever-else-platform so we're not sharing the mods anywhere else. Too much hassle.

If Steam doesn't sell it for you (e.g. you live in Germany) - see here, this is posted by a developer. I advice you to buy the game at a store that provides you a Steam key, otherwise you won't have access to the Steam workshop.

Also, the topic of piracy is prohibited by steam rules, so you expose yourself to a risk of getting permanently banned from steam community by steam moderators. We won't report your post, but we don't want any troubles either, so we reserve a right to delete such posts without any notice.
