Hotwire Explanation

Maybe I'm missing something very obvious, but the explanation on how to hotwire doesn't seem straightforward to me. How do you know which wires to combine? Is it just trying all possible combinations until it works? Or does it have something to do with the way the copper wiring looks on each of them?
