My Review
Alright, so this is going to be a long post. Grab yourself a drink, or a snack, you'll be here a while.

I'll start with the synopsis TL;DR:

Positives / Pro's:
  • Absolutely gorgeous map design! Everything felt typical Black Mesa. My jaw dropped at the Sector C rendition you guys made, and that's saying something.
  • Excellently composed soundtrack! (Listening to Master as Rails as I'm typing this!)
  • Plays well. Decent difficulty, except in trouble spots, which I'll get into a little while later.
  • Longer, and much more ambitiously made than the original game.

Negatives / Cons:
  • The story narrative revolves around a run-of-the-mill Security Officer in Black Mesa. While it is canonically proven these guys have a variety of training, it is unlikely to me that a security officer can survive all of this. It's plot armor, much like Gordon Freeman has, which is likewise unbelievable. This is a minor complaint that I let go of, but still wanted to mention.
  • Bugs. Such as the saving bug on c6_* maps and the Gargantua maps. I would advise hiring a QA team to playtest these prior to releasing a new build. This to keep in mind for Part Two.
  • As mentioned, the Gargantua maps are a pain, and I had to noclip through both of them. The bugs that people report are common, even for me. Provided fixes did not work.
  • Optimization/Stability issues. Why should this mod, unlike the actual game, not be ran on maximum settings? Obviously it crashes. I would address this. I have a gaming PC worth of $2700, and can't play it in full quality? Bit of a letdown.
  • The voice acting falls flat. Unfortunately, the lack of proper emotions during voice acting has made some characters, that have such custom lines, be unbelievable to me. Jarring was also the frequency Russian accents, considering this is an American company.

Onto the more detailed review:

Having seen this modification come by, following on the heels of playing Damocles, I decided to give it a go. Simply put: I couldn't stop playing. I had to finish it.

Despite all of its quirks and bugs, this modification has offered similar, if not more, gameplay in relation the actual game. It is masterfully crafted, and if this were a paid DLC (like others have said), I'd have gladly tossed in $15 for this. You have all done a wonderful job.

Jarring, however, as previously mentioned in this review, is the lack of supposed QA testing. Quality Assurance for mods of this scope are no luxury. Developers know how something should work. I would advise bringing in some players to run through edited maps, edited features, and simply ask them to try and break it every which way. If it doesn't, you've got something solid on your hands.

The Gargantua maps are currently a pain. I couldn't figure out the Hummer part, so the lack of handholding here has been a bit of an issue. Having fired 3-4 missiles before my Hummer was just absolutely destroyed by the shockwave. I've tried it five times before noclipping through. I couldn't get past the 3-4 missile amount fired. All solid hits, by the way.

Lastly, I would really like to give my compliments to the map designers / creators and the soundtrack composers. I run a Game Development company, and I can only be inspired by what you, freelance modders, managed to put together here. It is nothing short of an achievement to behold.

Depsite all the bugs, it didn't outright ruin my experience. Well done!

I look forward to what else you guys come up with.
