Once I set Garry's Mod to 2560×1440 it was impossible to start VR mode. Not only did VR mode didn't switch on when clicked but caused the game to shrink on screen on second attempt.
You should change the res in the gmod main menu right after launching it, if you change it in-game it breaks (but switching to windowed and back to fullscreen should fix it). The game shrinking on screen doesn't affect VR
When I set the resolution back and tried VR again it just wouldn't work.
So did you try going to the video options (while playing in a map), changing it to windowed, applying, then changing it to fullscreen, applying again, and then hitting "Start VR" and still got that error? If so, that is unfortunate since for me that fixes it every time (though I usually never get that problem in the first place if I change the resolution through the main menu before joining a map)
If I run in a boarderless window I can select the resolution but same thing happens regardless full screen or boarderless.
I understand the VRmod is still experimental so if there is just things it can't do yet that's fine (for some reason, not many programs made for the Oculus Rift are fond of the Oculus Rift S). I don't want to come off as inappreciative of a great mod. Even when pixelly and somewhat choppy I still have fun on maps with PC default res. I'm thankful this VRmod exist.
I don't mean keeping it in windowed mode, I mean switching it to windowed mode for a second and then back to fullscreen with the dsr resolution (in one step) before pressing "Start VR" should fix the problem
1. Start the game on default resolution
2. Switch to window mode
3. Set the resolution for my headset (as mentioned, I cannot set it to desired resolution in window mode)
4. Set it back to full screen.
5. Then Start VR Mode?
No, here's a detailed step by step.
0. Close gmod if it is open
1. Find gmod in your Steam library and press Play. The gmod main menu should open at fullscreen default res. Stay in the main menu, don't start a game.
2. Go to options through the main menu and select the DSR resolution and apply it
3. Start a game (join a map)
4. Try to start VR mode
This should work, but if it still does not start in vr and gives a "CreateDevice failed" error in console, stay in game and do the following:
5. Press ESC to pause the game and open Options through the pause menu to the Video tab
6. Set the "Display mode" dropdown to "Windowed" and "Resolution" dropdown to anything.
7. Press Apply
8. Set the "Display mode" dropdown to "Full screen", DO NOT PRESS APPLY/OK.
9. Set the "Resolution" dropdown to the desired DSR resolution, it should show up now even though the game is still running windowed.
10. Press Apply
11. Press ESC to close the pause menu
12. Try starting VR mode again.
For me this works every time. For the resolution I would recommend 3840x2160.
If it does not work for you and you followed the instructions exactly, then I don't know.
If it works or not thank you for at least helping me.
There are 2 kinds of "global dsr" that could be talked about here
1 is choosing what DSR resolutions (factors) to make available. which is indeed done globally through nvidia control panel. This doesn't actually do anything other than gives you higher resolutions as options in applications, which should not get used by default.
2 is actually using DSR, which you could do "globally" by changing your desktop resolution to a DSR resolution or "locally" by only changing the gmod resolution.
To me it sounded like OP was complaining about 2 because simply having factors selected in the control panel shouldn't hurt anything and shouldn't affect SteamVR Home performance in any way, and if you only changed the resolution of gmod then you should be playing gmod and not SteamVR home
