HMD not detected for Oculus Rift?
Not sure if anyone else is having this problem but it keeps saying HMD not detected (head mounted display) despite my Oculus clearly working. Any ideas for how to fix this?

I think it could be because of the graphics drivers you're running on

I do care about rift users. I'm not aware of any major rift issues so there isn't really much to address. Most complaints made by rift users are not rift specific issues. This "HMD not detected" error is not rift specific. It simply means SteamVR thinks you don't have a VR headset connected.
If SteamVR is running properly and you can see the SteamVR Home environment inside the headset you should not be getting this error at the same time. If you do, thats a problem with SteamVR.

The biggest actual rift-specific problem you may run in is that some controls may not work optimally, but I don't know if there is an actual problem with the default binds or if people have messed up their binds themselves.

dude, when i launch the VR mode, all i see is the grey steam VR environment while the actual game shows up on the PC fully tracked and everything. it works on my monitor, not in my oculus HMD

Did you see SteamVR Home inside the headset before you pressed the "Start in SteamVR" button in gmod? that scenario should have the best chance of it working.

I know of 2 people who have that grey environment issue and as far as I know they haven't managed to get it working. I don't know what causes it. If you did the above and it never works then your case might be one of these. It is unfortunate but you may need to accept that the mod doesn't work in your case and just forget about it. I do have a disclaimer on the workshop page saying it might not work for everyone.

This is not an Oculus specific issue since one of those users was using a Vive. And there are many people playing on the Oculus Rift with no issues (except some controls might not work which I need to look into).

When you launch SteamVR by itself with no other programs running, it starts Oculus home instead?

yes, oculus home auto starts.

have you tried to start the mod by rebooting your pc, then starting gmod and nothing else (so there arent any vr programs running and the headset is "off") and then click the start button in the vrmod menu?

I just received a report from another oculus user getting the same problem now (it used to work for them before). This might be a new thing, i'll try to find out if a recent update to the mod caused it or if its a problem with steamvr (theres been a ton of steamvr updates lately)

it might be an issue with oculus itself, because the game works fine on the monitor, shows up and everything. just in the headset its the SteamVR greyspace

A Rift CV1 user on the discord said they got the same problem but it started working after restarting gmod, so at least it's not completely broken for all Oculus users. Some other people are randomly crashing on entering VR where it didn't happen to them before. I think there's a bit of increased unreliability caused by recent updates to SteamVR and/or Oculus software. Your problem may or may not be related. It's possible your case is one of the rare ones where it wouldn't have worked in the past either. I don't think there's much I can do about it.
