Next update (1.420) will focus on polishing existing features and fixing some bugs.
Here a list of what to expect:
  • new scenes
  • polishing of campaign map, this includes some changes to the Germanic borders and added a new town, castle and some villages to fill the gaps between Germania Dacia and Sarmatia, fixing of pathfinding on sea (sea traveling and traveling from one town to the other via the magister civium will no longer result in the ship getting stuck or traveling over land.), the water terrain on the campaign map now looks better
  • some new events (including silk worm event)
  • additional events for freelancer, including repetitive ones
  • changes to latifundium: no longer possible to build it in deserts, a new scene for plain terrain, customizing/adding garrison to latifudium, hiring mercenaries in tavern of latifundium, utilizing it for safe resting, hiring a physician,
  • additions to purchaseable villas: now each one will include a chest were you can store items
  • followers party: instead of having camp followers in main party you can give them in a followers party (I am not sure about the details yet)
  • giving officers some use (not sure how though, I thought about giving a bonus to tactics or leadership, or maybe even a malus if you have a large army and no officers)
  • and a restructure of the camp menu, making it clearer

Nice! A lot of good things coming. Do you think it'd be save compatible or are some of those breaking changes?

The new scenes are only available if you start a new game. The chests for villas could break save games

@BanDHMO, I just found that I never answered to your suggestion about the pet gang. So I added an event chain for Avaritia and Superbus, but you won't be able to form this gang. A nice idea but I don't think it fits to the mod. Still the chain will have some surprises.

Other stuff I forgot to mention in the Blog:
* Minor factions will get more use via events (from @BanDHMO), even with the possibility of war
* Tributary mechanic will be fully implemented and useable by player
BanDHMO Aug 5, 2020 @ 2:28pm
Nice, I figured the tributary stuff wouldn't be in this one because it's more work, but you made it.

Also, I assumed the pet gang idea wasn't fitting for you when you didn't mention it in the response. Good to hear there's surprise content about them instead, looking forward to it!

PS Just to make sure, since you didn't respond to it, did you see and consider the last event I proposed in the previous blog thread, about Gibraltar?

Yes, I already added it. Sry, seems I forgot again to response.
I think it should be already in version 1.410. Wait a day on sea near Gibralta and it should trigger.

Maxi, I've been thinking about simple repeatable quests that would get the emperor player a reason to move around for a while (which the events do not, no matter how cool they are). I came up with this one below, where you have a suspicion about one of your vassals and have to find and talk to them to figure out if there's corruption involved. This should give the player emperor a bit of a reason to run around to all ends of the map, similar to how a new player does to deliver letters, collect debts, etc.

Take a look to see if you like it, but before implementing it if you do, consider if it'd be good to instead come up with a slightly more generalized version of it and several slightly different fluff texts, similar to how some of the nomadic tribe events work. Because there could be several reasons to investigate a vassal for "treason" and stealing from you is just one of them. Then the formula would be the same - send someone to find him for a small chance of success, or go yourself for a bigger chance. If caught, he faces the same "punishment" dialog where you decide what to do about the transgression. I'd need some time to rework the wording a bit to make it more generic and to write specific transgressions. This way it could be like several similar quests with much less than several times more coding.

Transgression type ideas:
- embezzlement (original version)
- adultery (i.e. being with another prominent Roman's wife/daughter without her family's permission, not the regular sleeping around while campaigning stuff)
- consorting with foreign spies
- disrespecting Roman gods
- cowardice in the field
- ignoring imperial laws

EDIT: I'll leave the struck out part for you to consider, but I'm liking it less and less, because either so much would have to be rewritten, it might as well be different events, or it would have to be generalized to the point of losing all flavor. Can't mention stealing because it may not be stealing, can't mention papers because what there are no papers involved, etc. So I'm liking this less and less. Maybe in addition to this one, I can make a generic one with a couple of options.

ACTUAL EVENT AND QUEST:
========================

Name: Corrupt Governor
Prereq: player is emperor

Preprocessing:
corrupt_settlement = random settlement belonging to Roman Empire
corrupt_governor = governor of corrupt_settlement
corrupt_governor_relations = corrupt_governor's current relations with the emperor
if corrupt_governor = player then exit

Text:
"
An adviser informs you of an irregularity in imperial finances. It seems {corrupt_governor} of {corrupt_settlement} has been sending significantly less coin to Rome than your advisers think is owed. Such disputes are routine and an imperial inspection of the settlement's finances can often establish facts. In this case, however, much of the original documents were said to be in {corrupt_governor}'s personal possession and were conveniently inaccessible while traveling on campaign.

Current relations with {corrupt_governor}: {corrupt_governor_relations}
"

Opt1: It's fine. I trust {corrupt_governor}. [corrupt_governor_relations +2, end]

Opt2: Send a letter, summoning {corrupt_governor}. And they'd better have all the papers.
80% chance: "{corrupt_governor} promptly arrives for inspection and acts an image of utmost loyalty. The documentation is beyond perfect. You will never know whether this is because your governor is truly innocent or because the long road to you allowed ample time to correct any evidence of wrongdoing." [end]

20% chance: "{corrupt_governor} arrives and submits for your inspection. It is clear there has indeed been stealing of what is owed to you." [go to corrupt_governor_quest_punishment dialog]

Opt3: Personally track down {corrupt_governor} in secret.
"You dismiss the advisers, but make a note to seek out {corrupt_governor} in your travels and demand the papers without warning. You will need to move fast, however. No matter how well you keep your intentions secret, rumors will spread and any evidence will surely disappear given time." [starts Corrupt Governor Quest]

{corrupt_governor} now gets the dialog option to talk:

"About your financial papers"
50% "Of course, Emperor. Everything is here. ^^(The governor's papers are in order. It seems there is a reasonable explanation for this low tax collections recently.)" [Player: "Very good." ends quest]

Rome is so ancient and steeped in tradition!
Egypt: Hold my beer!

So, here's a little civil war content for our new player emperor going to Egypt to get crowned Pharaoh like all the cool emperors did, drop some silver, get some right to rule, or screw it up royally by being a jerk. Also gives you a civil war target to conquer if you end up not holding Egypt. Hope you like it.

Also, obviously some creative license used there. Don't think we know completely what the coronation ceremonies looked like at what time, some of these may not have been in practice anymore, others may not have been held right at coronation, etc, but all are based on real coronation ceremonies of Ancient Egypt, and "it's a game", so. :)

Name: Pharaoh of Egypt
Prereq: timed, about 5-10 days into the civil war after player declares himself emperor, one-time only

Text:
"
Egyptian custom requires a god pharaoh as an intermediary between the people and divine world. Since Egypt became a province over a century ago, this role is traditionally held by the Roman Emperor.
^^
Though the Roman people do not much care about such Egyptian customs, the fertile Nile valley is a vital grain source for the city, and they do care about that. Disruptions in grain supplies will quickly hit the popularity of any ruler.
^^
An elaborate ceremony involving a whole ancient kingdom worshiping you as a god would not hurt a new emperor's credibility either. Once you control Alexandria, it is time to be officially recognized as Pharaoh.
"

Opt1(available if Alexandria belongs to your empire): Time to be become Pharaoh. [start quest become_pharaoh]

Opt2(available if Alexandria held by another country): Time to conquer Alexandria and become Pharaoh." [start quest become_pharaoh]

Title: Become Pharaoh
Quest Stage Text:
"When you control Alexandria, speak to the magistrate civium there to initiate a coronation ceremony."

Alexandria MC now gets the dialog option to talk (only if Alexandria belongs to your kingdom):

Player: I am the Emperor of Rome and thus the Pharaoh of Egypt!
MC: "Of course, my Emperor. Nobody can argue the throne is not rightfully yours. ^^However... the ancient tradition dictates that one must undergo a number of ceremonies and rites, accompanied by long lavish festivals. Only then can one wear the double crown of Egypt and be a true Pharaoh."
Player: What ceremonies?
MC: "There are 5 main ceremonies. The transition often lasts up to a year and, of course, there's the matter of cost... ^^It will look best if you pay for it personally, but we can put the burden on the Egyptian nobility if you prefer. ^^You will get the most admiration if you carefully go through each ceremony, but we can try to combine and shorten the process at the risk of offending some.)"

Opt1: Screw your ceremonies, we are fighting a war! I will wear the crown today and appear before the people.
"The whole of Egypt is shocked by such blatant disregard of their traditions. News of your insulting behavior spreads and your numerous enemies are quick to jump on the opportunity, adding oil into the fire and stirring unrest.
^^Before long, there are rebellions breaking out all over the province. Troops loyal to you are tied up in the fighting, thousands are slaughtered, villages razed and crops burned down. Rome's precious supply of grain is disrupted and difficult to replace during the civil war, causing unrest in the eternal city itself. Soon, Rome's streets are filled with riotous mobs and awash in blood.
^^None of this helps anyone see you as a true Emperor."
[-empire stability, --Rome relations, -right to rule, --Alexandria prosperity, --Thebes prosperity, spawn bandit/rebel parties all over Egypt and near Rome, end quest]

Opt2 (must have 150000 gold): Make it one grand ceremony. I will pay for it. (150000 denari)
"You finance a lavish festival while the best of Egypt's priests and scholars find elaborate ways to absolutely minimize the time necessary to conduct all ceremonies without offending traditions too much. Your haste raises a few eyebrows and there is a disgruntled minority of traditionalists, but overall the ceremony is a success. You presented before the people of Egypt wearing the double crown and they have recognized you as a god. The province is at peace and steady supplies of grain flow to Rome, buying the loyalty of its people."

Traditionally, this would be the ritual killing of the king of your enemies, and debates raged on whether this needed to be postponed until you end the civil war, so that the pretender emperor can be killed. Ultimately, the recently captured chief of a border tribe of raiders was substituted instead."

One argues for a grand statue of Isis whose size would make you an infant in comparison, another demands using a live woman dressed as the goddess for full authenticity. ^^The choice is ultimately yours, but whether you listen to either adviser or go with tradition, the people have already thoroughly enjoyed the festival."

It involves the creation of a ceremonial rowboat marked with the picture of Sokar, the god of the underworld and holy guardian of royal cemeteries. As you pull the boat to the Nile and release it, you have to decide what you will wish upon Nero."

First, there is the appearance of the King of Upper Egypt, then the King of Lower Egypt, who just happens to be also you. Finally, the Appearance of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt. ^^It is done. You are the Pharaoh of Egypt, successor to over three hundred Pharaohs, who ruled this ancient land over three millenia. Every man, woman and child in this land bows to you as a god. The power emanating from your crown is almost palatable."

I like the idea, but I will think of a better way how to trigger it. I think it is better to trigger it once, when the player faction owns egypt + player is Emperor. So it will also trigger if you manage to avoid civil war or if you start as Emperor right away.

Text:

Current relations with {corrupt_governor}: {corrupt_governor_relations}

Corrupt Governor Quest
Title: Corrupt Governor
Quest Stage Text:
"Find and confront {corrupt_governor} about corruption without warning. You will need to move fast, however. No matter how well you keep your intentions secret, rumors will spread and {corrupt_governor} will surely destroy any evidence if given time."
Expires in: 5 days

{corrupt_governor} now gets the dialog option to talk:

"About your financial papers"
50% "Of course, Emperor. Everything is here. ^^(The governor's papers are in order. It seems there is a reasonable explanation for this low tax collections recently.)" [Player: "Very good." ends quest]

50% "My Emperor, I can explain... ^^(There is no good explanation. The papers clearly show corruption.)" [go to corrupt_governor_quest_punishment dialog]

corrupt_governor_quest_punishment dialog
------------------------------
Player: "This is treason, {corrupt_governor}. And you know the maximum punishment for that."

if corrupt_governor personality = honorable (i.e. upstanding or good-natured):
corrupt_governor_reaction = "Please, my Emperor, I have always been good and loyal."
if corrupt_governor personality = martial:
corrupt_governor_reaction = "It was wrong, but isn't a good fighter worth a lot to you?
^^I deserve punishment, but not death. Let me earn your favor back on the battlefield, smiting your enemies."
if corrupt_governor personality = dishonorable or circumstantial (i.e. cunning, pitiless, sadistic, bad-tempered):
corrupt_governor_reaction = "Please, don't rush to harsh judgement, my Emperor. Isn't there any way we can work out a deal?"
//According to wiki this covered all the personalities, but if I missed some you know of, please add them to whatever bucket makes most sense.

{corrupt_governor}: {corrupt_governor_reaction}
Player: "I will let you live, but..."

Opt1: You will return double what you stole. [+50000gold, governor -50000gold, corrupt_governor_relations +5]
Opt2: You'd better be very loyal now, or this judgement goes into force. [corrupt_governor_relations +30]
Opt3: I am taking half of your fortune as punishment. ({governor_gold*0.5} denari) [corrupt_governor_relations -10, gold += governor_gold*0.5, governor_gold=0.5*governor_gold]
Opt4: I will take everything you have and humiliate you in the streets of Rome. ({governor_gold} denari) [corrupt_governor_relations -50, gold += governor_gold, governor_gold=0]
The event looks at the first sight like the one already presented in the game but it is different in many aspects. I will either think about adjusting the already existing one with the additional options and ideas from your event or just add your event. (I currently prefer the latter option, as more variety in events is always something nice)

Also, regarding adultery: This is something I already thought about, having a imperator Rome style event where you have to be the judge and since love affairs are already in the mod I think I will add something like this some day.

In general, those quests you suggest could be done in a style like the 'quarrel between lords escalate quest' which is already in native: Minister sends message, you consult with minister, you get new quest in which you have to talk with someone.

"I think it is better to trigger it once, when the player faction owns egypt + player is Emperor. So it will also trigger if you manage to avoid civil war or if you start as Emperor right away."

It would be nice, I always hate when content has to be made dependent on earlier choices, because that means some players won't get a chance to see it. Also, you can avoid the civil war? Nice!

"Minister sends message, you consult with minister, you get new quest in which you have to talk with someone."

Exactly. The challenging part for me is to come up with believable reasons why an emperor would actually have to go find somebody instead of just summoning them. The "surprise or he will hide the evidence" scheme was for that. But I guess in the quarrel example, it's already not very believable, but doesn't stop it from being a good quest nonetheless, so anything will probably work well.

Maxi, correction to the Egypt text above. Forgot to scrub dates:

"Since Egypt became a province in 30BC, this role is traditionally held by the Roman Emperor."

Should be

"Since Egypt became a province over a century ago, this role is traditionally held by the Roman Emperor."

Three more random emperor event proposals, if you like, themed around agriculture getting messed up by a disaster. One is province-wide, the other two deal with wildfires threatening your particular latifundium.

RANDOM EVENTS PART 9:
=====================
Name: Invasion of the Beetles

Prerequisite: player is emperor, has >300000 denarii

set {pested_city} = random city belonging to the Roman Empire, not directly governed by the player

"
The countryside around {pested_city} is being devastated by a previously unseen beetle. The insect hordes reproduce rapidly and leave nothing but devoured leaf skeletons behind them. This caused many commercially important crops to fail, hitting tax revenue, and worse yet, for many who farmed on the edge of subsistence, a season of starvation and death is on the horizon.
^^The situation in the province is getting tense. There have been riots and robbers have gotten more common and brazen on the roads, including several attacks on military messengers and supply convoys.
"

Opt1: Do not get involved.
"The matter is left for the local governor to handle. Whether from lack of resources or through mismanagement, the local response to this crisis proves insufficient. Many farmers are wiped out, and people facing starvation turn to violence, further demolishing what's left of the economy in the area. ^^Inside the city, food prices spike and hungry riots are repeatedly put down by the sword. ^^The citizens' trust in Rome and the emperor is eroded, tax revenue drops, but somehow, the noble families in favor with the local governor end up owning even more land, having bought it at low prices during the crisis."
[---city prosperity, --city relations, spawn 6 bandit gangs in the area]

Opt2: Send food aid to the city. (75000 denarii)
"A mission led by your most trusted and capable people ships food into the city and distributes it to the needy. This helps blunt the impact of the crisis, at least inside the city walls, which swells with refugees from the countryside. ^^Your assistance is greatly appreciated by all, but the countryside is still devastated, and without it much of the province's economy is gone."
[-75000 denarii, --city prosperity, ++city relations, spawn 3 bandit gangs in the area]

Opt3: Buy up cheap land to profit from the crisis. (250000 denarii)
"You let the disaster unfold as it will. Many farmers are wiped out, and people facing starvation turn to violence, further demolishing what's left of the economy in the area. ^^Inside the city, food prices spike and hungry riots are repeatedly put down by the sword.
^^Your involvement buying up cheap land does not go unnoticed, and exactly nobody sees your actions as supporting falling land prices, so that people selling would make more money when selling. Instead, it is seen as marauding, profiteering, and behavior unworthy of an emperor. ^^You make a lot of money by reselling the land after the crisis passes, but the whole province is now united in its hate of you."
[-250000 denarii, +350000 denarii, ---city prosperity, ----city relations, spawn 6 bandit gangs in the area]

Opt4: Send aid while buying cheap land to profit from the crisis. (300000 denarii)
"You use part of the funds to blunt the worst effects of the crisis, while also deploying people with plentiful coin to keep an eye out for good deals on distressed farms.
^^This helps soften the suffering, at least inside the city walls, which swells with refugees from the countryside. ^^Your assistance is greatly appreciated by all and helps divert attention from your more selfish investment activities. The countryside is still devastated, and without it much of the province's economy is gone.

Summer is the season of wild fires and every year thousands of estates are devastated by the flames. This year, fires burning near {wildfire_village} have approached close enough to threaten your {wildfire_latifundium}.
^^
Through the actions of a fire crew comprised mostly of men organized by {wildfire_village_governor} to protect the village and surrounding areas, major damage to your property was avoided.
^^
Your advisers recommend this is a good opportunity to build goodwill with the governor by recognizing the achievement.
"

Opt1: Send a letter to the governor, expressing your appreciation.
"The governor is thankful for your recognition and replies humbly. Though he would not admit it, it is clear that your property was handled with the greatest care and protected at all costs, while others had to be abandoned to burn."
[+relations with {wildfire_village_governor}]

Opt2: Reward the governor for his actions. (50000 denarii)
"The damages could have been devastating, as they were to some neighbouring latifundia. The governor's actions have saved you much money in repairs, so it would be reasonable to expect some reward. However, your generosity is not expected and the governor is delighted by the expensive gifts and even more so by the sign of the emperor's favor they represent."
[-50000 denarii, +++relations with {wildfire_village_governor}]

Opt3: Do nothing. Protecting the emperor's property is expected.
"The latifundium did not burn down, so there's no need to punish anyone, but why reward? Should each soldier be separately rewarded for not stabbing you, too? Preposterous!"
[no effect]

"The governor has failed in his most basic duty. He is forced to resign and pay such a high sum to you that it more than covers the cost of repairs. ^^This is not particularly popular among other noble families, who can see themselves easily being in this governor's shoes some day."

Fire events for latifundium are something I was considering. But I am not sure if I make an Emperor event out of them. Probably I will adjust them and make them normal events also possible if player is govenor of city (for the beetle) and the latifundium events just if you own a latifundium

Hey, Maxi, here's one more random city event:

RANDOM EVENTS PART 10:
=====================

Name: Is this art?
Prereq: player is Roman, has city, enters city

Text:
"
Free entertainment is an important perk of being a Roman and theater is a popular passtime for plebs and the wealthy alike. Another is philosophy, practiced from the most esteemed noble thinkers clad in senatorial robes to the common unwashed homeless street philosophers in rags.
^^
One day the two collided, as a rag-clad, barrel-dwelling follower of Diogenes decided to repeat the stunt of the old Greek Cynic in front of you. He rushed to the front of the theater in the middle of a performance, bared himself and produced a large, seamy pile of fresh excrement in the middle of the stage, much to the shock of the attending public.
^^
Naturally, he is quickly apprehended and attention turns to you to decide his fate.
"

Opt1: Applaud and ask him if you could do him any favor. "The philosopher grins happily, impressed by your knowledge of Diogenes' story. He completes the exchange as per the fable, asking you to stand out of his sun. ^^A few of the more educated citizens smile, recognizing the conversation between Diogenes and Alexander, but the intricacy is lost on most people who simply see you having an odd conversation with a disrespectful troublemaker instead of punishing him. The plebs do not like this, but word of your erudition spreads among nobility." [-city relations, +random Roman lord relations, +random Roman lady relations, +senate]

Opt2: Have him beaten as punishment. "At your command the guards use sticks to administer some swift and harsh Roman justice. The crowd expected this and is happy to watch. The whole event becomes an integral part of the day's entertainment and no more than a curious talking point." [no effect]

Opt3: Crucify him on stage and continue the play.
"Administering punishment normally reserved for grave crimes to a crazed troublemaker is seen as harsh, but not to the point of causing unrest. The crowd is split between those who cheer and revel in the inclusion of some unexpected blood in the theatrical performance and those uncomfortable watching the man's drawn-out final suffering as a backdrop to a comedy performance. ^^As for the crazy philosopher himself, his eyes burn with excitement, and he even laughs at some of the jokes performed by the actors. Whether he hoped for it or not, your actions fit well into his art, and history may remember this story." [-honor, +renown]
