Historically, the Khmer Empire fell in 1431 which left Cambodia in decline after the 15th century. Not only that, Cambodian lands in the Mekong river fell to the Vietnamese and also suffered attacks as well by Thailand. By the time of the Industrial era when the House of Norodom, Cambodia's ruling dynasty, was under French control, things might be somewhat improved as it was. Later during the Cold War, Cambodia went under Lo Nol, and later the Khmer Rouge and the Kampuchean People's Revolutionary Party, in which in the 1990s renamed to Cambodian People's Party when the monarchy is restored.
