Then I like to rush space tech 1 and get quasar carriers. I build myself a couple of carrier fleets with 4 carriers each and some ships to hold the frontline while fighters do the work.
Ground forces just need a couple of units to hold the frontline then 2 units of arty (OP as hell) behind to kill everything. Add 1 Officer (with X-Wing support) and two units of snowspeeders. Unless there are Turbolaser towers there is very little the AI can do about them. Easy living.
After that I can just conquer whatever I want.
EDIT: Also you should always have an active smuggler on Coruscant (until you own it). Dude makes 1k credits per week easy.
I did it with an infiltration team!
So one thing that I'm thinking is a bug, is that with units like the Infiltrators, Saboteurs, Kota's stealth special forces, and even Rebel field commanders - units that have a volume cap - when they start to be killed off, you can't re-build them until all of those units are killed or sold and no longer on the galactic map . Then they become available to build again at their full cap amount.
So with taking Coruscant against the Empire, I made sure to have a full stealth infiltration team along with Kyle, Chewie, Han, and Leia. I let the Emperor come to me and took pot-shots at him and then ran away before he could turn my entire infiltration team (he did this one time and I had to restart from a save). So with the Emperor dead I then made my way to the three power generators in the northwest corner, destroying the turrets along the way. Then I had Chewie commandeer an AT-AT and had him destroy the three power generators. And from there it was just destroying remaining units and buildings.
For example, the Empire currently has two or three fleets in the Core that have 7 or 8 Star Destroyers along with numerous support ships including Victory Star Destroyers. The Black Sun also has a couple of fleets around the Core with Lucrehulks, Venators, Kyramuds, Providence carriers, and numerous support ships.
After hyperspacing in, Imperial and Black Sun capital ships immediately start approaching because their fleets vastly outnumber mine. I'll then attack the nearest capital ships with just the starfighters the Mandator and Home One provide, taking out their shields and engines, and then let the Mandator and Home One finish them off. Before the Mandator and Home One take too much damage, I'll retreat. This helps to thin out huge enemy fleets until I can finish them off.
It's also important to not allow the Mandator to take too much damage. It doesn't have engine hardpoints, so it's not as easy to tell when you're going to lose it if you retreat.
