Re: the Ending, so I don't keep reloading my game and trying again
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. STOP READING.

Is there a "perfect" ending to this UGC like there was for SR:HK? Meaning: is there a way that EVERYONE who ends up on the space station can live (including the player character)?

I've already gotten two different endings there -- one where I die and my lover comforts me,
one where I die and my sister does. I can't bring myself to make someone else die in my place;
that's just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rude, yes?

For SR:HK, I kiiiind of kept reloading until I eventually did the entire game a second time in order to get the ending where I tell the Queen with a Thousand Teeth to ♥♥♥♥ off and I saved my stepdad from eternal torment both. I'm wondering if there's a similar, difficult to achieve ending here, or if SOMEBODY always has to die.

If it's the latter, please just tell me so I stop re-loading my game and trying again, so I can have some peace and leave it be with the ending I personally prefer. It's not so much a matter of "omg why can't I get a perfect ending!?" (perfect is relative) as "can you tell me if I should stop looking for said ending so I can have some peace here, and if there IS such an ending tell me how to get it so I stop flailing around and don't have to reload the ENTIRE damn UGC."

cirion, if you have comments here, I'd love to hear 'em.

:gargoyle: SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER :gargoyle:

There is no "perfect" ending. There are a few minor variations in how things can go down depending on who you bring with you, who remains behind, your past and current relationships with various people, etc., but there will probably be at least a little sadness in any conclusion.

Of course, it ultimately depends on the player and how they feel about their companions. A few people have been fully satisfied with the "sacrifice other" ending, but I think most folks will feel some regret regardless of what they choose.

Congrats on your victory! And you have my permission to stop flailing. :snaggletooth:

I'm wondering if its possible to convince Gavan to give up. All the dirt I've found on him and the dialogue options seem to suggest its possible, but I've only managed to convince him to trigger his DMS. I suppose I have to go back and try to save Wilco(if possible)?

After rolling back my saves a few times, I think the self-sacrifice ending had the strongest emotional impact. It was very bittersweet.

@Solidus you can't stop Gavan from activating the DMS, but you can change the circumstances under which it happens. You can persuade him that his situation is hopeless so he activates the switch himself, persuade him to quit so the Camelot agents kill him, or just attack and defeat him in combat.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think both endings are valid, but I agree that this particular ending can have a stronger impact, especially if you identify with your character.

I really liked the ending being bitter sweet whichever way you choose to do it.

In my play through I left the PU in a strong position but stuck to my principles rather than throw my lot in with Dorbi and the corps. Meaning the PU was 'shut out of the post-Saito regieme', which makes a lot of sense. I'm still glad with the choice, the PU still fighting the good fight from the sidelines and shadows seems a better ending for it than being the face for the power hungry and wealthy! Plus Nova wern't exactly ever going to be fans after I shut *everyone* out of Fuchi.

That said, I'm curious about how things turned out for the PU when they sided with Dorbi?

I'm just happy I got a Dragon speaking at my funeral, and not that turn coat queen beneath the mountain.

I have just played through all three campaigns and wanted thank you for making such a great mod. I enjoyed all the mods, but I think the second was the strongest of all three. Like Dark Ether I ended up with a similar ending, whilst it is not a happy ending, it is realistic ending and that is more than can be said for alot of professionally developed games. The ending strikes the right amount of optimism with the sadness of the main character dying along with a realist outcome for the PU. The writing in this game has been a ♥♥♥♥ load better than alot pro games that I have played.

So someone must die. Our character or a companion... ♥♥♥♥, I was convinced that I was mistaken somewhere but, there is no happy end.
Pfff... well, new run and this time my characte will survive... maybe...
The ending was fantastic imho. And while many games have a very dissapointing last showdown this one most certainly wasn´t one of those in my book.

>_> Going for spoilers here, but is there a way to NOT get Valiri get murdered? I did find out that if you refuse to fight by ending turn repeatedly it leads to alternate stuff but nothing to let her live. Did I miss something or she's damned there?

@Knightingales: No. Like you discovered, there are some variations in how things happen and the details of what goes down, but no matter what, you and Kora are the only ones to escape that place alive. The other two were doomed even before they ever met you.

Am very sad, but good to know. Thank you

Holy Crap! OMG you suck! Great story and I want more!

I'm sad for Arelia, but she was the best choice for self-sacrifice in my new party.
My dwarf was the strong and charismatic leader of the PU, not necesseraly the nicest but just and practical. Kora is too important for the PU, Masao the one who could contact marines and turn them over Saito... Meft me with Isao and Aralia... Those two was great choice for self sacrifice but my cute little dwarf was with Isao... Aralia, you died a hero.

Really great campaign with really good character. Like for caceldot, I really liked my own character who has a past, a family and even a futur (make it really hard to sacrifice my elf in my first run). Too few games and story work really on the MC and make him/her a real part of the story and the universe. Great job.

And I really really want a sequel when a new character can punch Saito in the face... and the nuke him.

If you played The Caldecott Caper before playing Calfree in chains, everything you need to know to get the best possible ending is given to you IF YOU PAY ATTENTION.

In the second visit to Berkley, Hestaby speaks; Pay close attention to what she says

C'mon! What does she say? I'm dead curious now! I'm traumatized by the ending.

I cannot remember exact verbiage but paraphrased,
get ALL the different metas to form an alliance against Saito and blow up the space station, oh and stay single more or less
