there are maps like this which do hint at late 20th century, some that take place in far far futures, in far far past...
if you absolutely want to ascribe time to "the garry's mod":
the game mostly has Half Life 2 assets, which end up influencing the style and look of most maps of the game; and considering that HL2 takes place at around 2000s, which that style reflects, you could attribute it to around that time lol
Who's to say that the two towers in gm_bigcity are the same WTC? And even if so, it may as well be an alternate history timeline where they were never destroyed lol
And, to be fair, gm_bigcity is not an official Garry's Mod map and is therefore likely not canon lol
My comment still applies.
Just because gm_bigcity is based on New York City, that does not necessarily mean that the two towers it has are necessarily WTC, or that those two towers of gm_bigcity would be destroyed in the year 2001 of its canon.
Hell, we can even assert that they *were* destroyed, but later rebuilt, and the canon takes in 2040 where we have the two new towers instead, but the society hasn't visibly progressed beyond the urbanism of early 21st century.
gm_bigcity has many inaccuracies to the actual New York City, most likely intentional because a plain remake of an existing city would be boring and hard to do with Hammer. It is its own creation that is separate from the real city that we have, where the two towers it had were indeed destroyed.
And even if we do presume that gm_bigcity's presence before 11th September 2001, the canon of gm_bigcity is not necessarily canon of Garry's Mod itself either. Both of those things are suggestions, but not facts that ascertain anything.
world trade center wasn't rebuilt in real life, world trade center was replaced by one world trade center and 9/11 memorial museum, and no, gmod doesn't take place in 2040, they still have guns, and cars 20th century
Whatever happened in real life, even if visually similar, is not relevant to Garry's Mod's canon. And yes, things made in 20th century will probably still exist and see use in 2040 in real life too.
You don't know enough about Garry's Mod's canon to assert that. I don't either.
