Original map made by Bigwig


gm_bigcity_improved

A modified version of bigcity with no particular gimmick or theme. Just a little of everything to make the map a bit more interesting and less empty feeling. FYI some key areas have been modified or completely removed. More details below.

Features
- Water in the canals
- Cubemaps
- More enterable areas
- Paintable skybox
- Trees
- Static props for extra detail
- Nav Mesh
- Strider nodes
- Chopper / Gunship nodes
- New soundscapes

- Removed underground area by the canals
- Removed the cafe baltic "jumpscare"
- Removed the dump (hilly terrain near edge of map [its a dump if you weren't aware])
- Replaced white tile foundation with grass and added trees

No additional content required

If the map is too slow, try the Lite version

Kristal Kat yes the map does and the ragdolls came alive and formed groups and one of the groups chose to start a war with the other groups and then the group then lost and after losing they found a new leader and that new leader took control and decided to try exterminating a group of ragdolls and they waged war again but they had bombs and bombed the shit out of eachother and i died and got crucified

for some reason several building textures have been replaced with some random tf2 wall texture? I've used this map for a long time and never had this problem

Thanks, everyone, for still playing this flawed piece of junk I made when I was 16. There were so many things I wanted to do with the map, but realized I couldn't due to the engine limits -- or I just decided not to because it would make the map too slow for my friends with extremely low-end computers. The result is that there are a lot of random things I left alone without expanding upon, but by now, I think if I changed anything, I'd mess up a bunch of save files and make some people very angry, so I don't even know what I would do if I had time to change anything these days.

In hindsight, I don't think gm_bigcity needed any improvement. I just wanted to add some extra features to make it slightly more fun and make it look a little bit less depressing because it was a popular map on my sandbox server. But in that sense, you might as well just make a new map. Working with gm_bigcity was always a tricky balancing act between features and performance because of the layout.

I'll release the night version someday. Just been too busy with life so I had to delay it.

It's also the fact that I know it won't be a small project because I want to do the night version properly (i.e., not just change the brightness). I want to put different soundscapes for night time and I want to add partial illumination to some of the building windows. Doing the soundscapes requires sourcing sound effects or recording them myself, making the sounds loopable, and then testing them out in-game multiple times until I am satisfied. The building illumination requires making custom textures and editing some of the brushwork in the map and (again) lots of testing in-game.

Its all possible, but it takes time, and the source engine workflow is (to put it gently) not the most straightforward.
