Hacking Skill

Description
Hacking Skill & Traits
It's a new age! Or at least almost. WarGames came out 10 years ago and I've heard whispers of some cool movies coming in the next 6 years.

This mod adds a new skill, Hacking, and three traits.
Amateur Hacker | 2 Points | +1 Hacking level
Master Hacker | 6 Points | +3 Hacking level
Tin Foil Hat | -3 Points | Hacking level cap becomes 2

Hacking Activities
Project Zomboid doesn't provide a whole lot of opportunities for hacking, which makes sense since we're in 1993. That doesn't mean there aren't any though! Here is a list of ways to gain hacking XP:
  • Checking and disabling car alarms.
  • Checking and disabling house alarms.
  • Brute force hacking of credit cards (if Mail Order Catalogs is installed)

Base Game Traits
The following base game traits affect hacking in one way or another:
Dextrous | -10% chance to trigger an alarm
Lucky | -15% chance to trigger an alarm
All Thumbs | +10% chance to trigger an alarm
Unlucky | +15% chance to trigger an alarm

Sandbox Options
Under "Hacking Skill Settings" there are two toggles which allow you to disable XP gains for hacking building and vehicle alarms, in the off chance you don't consider those to be hacking.

Mod Support
Currently has automatic support for the following mods:

Compatibility
Hopefully there are no issues, but I'm sure there are some. I purposefully touched as little base game code as possible and prefixed everything in an attempt not to clash.

Build 41 Multiplayer
Multiplayer appears to be fully functional! Enjoy!

Modders
Hacking Skill comes with an API. If you're a modder and have something that could be considered "hackable" you can easily give XP via API for anyone using the skill. Check out GitHub for more information.

Of course, I'm just glad we got it situated. I will put Better Lockpicking on the todo list. Currently working on a batch of patches for another mod, but I will get on it.

@Jusblazm Thanks for the distribution fix! It would be great if the mod could be made more compatible with Better Lockpicking [B42] . Right now, both add an “alarm check” option to the context menu, and it’s not easy to tell which one comes from which mod (maybe a mod option to hide check alarm from the context menu?).

That said, only this mod provides the ability to disarm alarms, which is a huge motivation for me to gather books and develop it as a skill. Overall, thanks again for the mod, and take some SP for inspiration :cherrypie:

Hey @Jusblazm , I’ve opened an issue [github.com] on the repo cuz getting an exception from the mod during game start - please take a look when you have time.

don't worry, after I wrote the uncertainty code, I argued with my character because, for longer than I care to admit, I forgot to activate the debug check and it kept telling me the alarm wasn't active when I knew it was.
I can look into the music and see what I can do. I don't have a time frame for this though.

It's a great mod ! I often argue with my character when she tells me there's no alarm detected and proceeds to trigger one (lies ! the lies ! a liar who lies !!!) but other than that it's simple and efficient.
Is there any chance the hacking skill could be used to deactivate the creepy muzak in some malls and community centers ? I don't know if it's feasible (maybe the music is hardcoded or something), but it'd be a very welcome feature !
