Kuznetsov aircraft carrier
The Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is the latest aircraft carrier in active service in Russia. It was built during the Soviet era. The project number is "Project 1143.5 Heavy Aviation Cruiser". Construction began in 1983.
The ship was originally named the Soviet Union, Kremlin, Brezhnev, and Tbilisi during its construction. When it was commissioned in 1991, it was renamed Kuznetsov. At that time, the hull number was 113, and the current hull number is 063.
Like other Russian-made aircraft carriers, it has the armament of a cruiser. It still has considerable combat power after deducting carrier-based aircraft. It is the only aircraft carrier in Russia.
The Russian Navy's positioning of the "Kuznetsov" is different from that of the US Navy's positioning of aircraft carriers.
Russia calls it a "heavy aviation cruiser" that can defend and support strategic missile submarines and surface ships, and carry some carrier-based aircraft.
After the plan No. 1143.5 was delivered to the Black Sea Shipyard, the ship was started in 1982, put into use in 1991, and was actually launched on December 4, 1985.
It was first named "Riga" after Riga, the capital of Latvia, but was renamed "Leonid Brezhnev" in November 1982;
Then it was renamed "Tbilisi" after Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, in August 1987, until it was finally named "Soviet Navy Marshal Kuznetsov" on October 4, 1990.
In November 1991, when the Soviet Union was about to disintegrate, it was originally planned to belong to Ukraine, but most of the crew members were drawn from the Northern Fleet, so a few crew members left their home port late at night and planned to defect to Russia. It set out from the Black Sea and quickly broke through Türkiye, and then joined the Northern Fleet ever since.
