0-6-0 Saddle Tanks

Description
Behind every great man is a great woman, behind every great general is a great army, and behind every great hundred-car freight train or stainless-steel streamliner is the great little saddle tank that got it all ready.
This pack salutes those modest engines with a pair that can stand in for the countless unsung saddle-tanks that ran the freight yards, industrial spurs, and branch lines from the early 1910s right up to the end of the steam era (and beyond in preservation!)

Obviously, I can't cover every variation out there, so if you want to modify it further to match your favorite prototype, have at! Just, y'know, with proper credit, you probably know the drill already.

Credits
  • Built from scratch by Dark Derby
  • Drivers and whistle sound by CygnusOX
  • All other sounds ripped from Sid Meier's Railroads!

Controls
Both engines feature a host of lighting controls for added realism! Simply press L+# for...
  • L+1 - Backup light
  • L+2 - Firebox glow
  • L+3/4 - Open/close cab doors

Prototypes
Reliance Rock Co. no. 1 (now Consolidated Rock Products no. 1), built by Baldwin in 1925. This engine worked its entire career in the suburbs of Los Angeles, hauling gravel from a quarry in Duarte to a crusher in Azusa. In 1955, the Smog Control Board ordered that Conrock replace the engine with a diesel; at the time, it was the last revenue steam engine in LA. It sat at the quarry until 1958, when it was donated to the Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park for the enjoyment of generations of railfans (including a young Dark Derby!)
This model represents a composite between the prototype's overall "shape" and the lettering of a Rivarossi model from back in the day.

Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal no. 15, built by H.K. Porter in 1917. One of two built for the Mesta Machine Works of West Homestead, Pennsylvania, this engine and its twin went to the BEDT in 1934. For thirty years, it racked up untold miles scurrying through the alleys and street tracks of Brooklyn, not to mention extensive "sailing" thanks to the BEDT's extensive car-float operations. Retired in 1963, no. 15 passed between a few preservation railroads until 1998. That year, it was sold to the Strasburg Rail Road, which restored it to operation as a functioning replica of Thomas the Tank Engine that still runs today. Fortunately for purists, its sister engine BEDT no. 14 is preserved by the Ulster & Delaware Railroad Historical Society, among numerous preserved Porter 0-6-0s.
The livery on this model is inspired by the BEDT's later livery, used from the early 1940s to the 1960s.
