Опис
First commissioned in 1980 after a somewhat troubled development process, the Type 24, Cumberland-class, frigates are sixteen anti-submarine and surface warfare focused frigates built for the Royal Navy between 1977 and 1984. These ships were developed in response to growing threats of Soviet submarines and the inability for smaller Royal Navy frigates to carry Ikara in large enough numbers to reasonably screen vulnerable capital ships. The first ship, Cumberland, would be laid down in 1977, with her hull and superstructure design derived from the American Perry-class frigate to accelerate development time. Fifteen additional ships would be ordered and built over the next several years, boasting an Ikara launcher, 12 RGM-84 Harpoons, a MK75 3-inch gun, MK46 torpedoes, Sea Wolf, and a pair of Lynx helicopters. These ships became the anti-submarine workhorses of the Royal Navy and a select few export customers during the 1980s and the remainder of the Cold War. These frigates were heavily deployed during NATO exercises in the 1980s, often operating alongside other NATO frigates, ensuring that the GIUK gap remained closed to Soviet submarines.

Right, further expanding my currently rather small Royal Navy repertoire, the Type 24 frigates serve as a nice alternative to a full-sized Type 43 for lower intensity engagements or more anti-submarine focused operations with little focus on AAW. This is my first time doing anything with the Perry and I figured the Royal Navy deserved a frigate such as this to help fill out the roster. I plan to do several more Royal Navy ships, with at least one cruiser, a helicopter command cruiser, and maybe some other small escorts as I have time and get the ideas to make them. With that, I'll let the frigates speak the rest for themselves, enjoy! Update Note: Added Argentine and Chilean versions with their own specific quirks and modifications from the base British variant.
