Roguelike Mode

Description
Something strange is happening beneath Dawnsbury, in the deep and fathomly depths that snake through the surface of Our Point of Light. Sinister Starborn and their cruel worshipers awaken, and new heroes must venture forth to face the looming threat!

Test your mettle in this repeatable adventure path, with over 40 different possible encounters and dozens of new enemies, where each randomly generated run is unique from the last!

A Roguelike Adventure
This mod is my attempt at adding a replayable roguelike mode into Dawnsbury Days, ranging from levels 1-4!

It contains a huge quantity of homebrew monsters and magic items for your party to plunder in the Below, on their quest to thwart the ominous but legally generic Demon Queen of Spiders and her sinister Drow worshippers. But the mod also contains all manner of fun inclusions, ranging from Owlbears to vicious Merfolk dwelling within flooded caverns.

Unlike other adventure paths, the encounters your party will face in this game mode are totally randomised by drawing from a pool of over 40 different hand crafted encounters to construct a unique set of challenges. The encounters are divded into regular, elite and skill challenge encounters, as well as a final boss encounter that must be overcome to complete the run. Each adventuring day, the party will face 2 regular encounters, broken up by a skill challenge, before facing a final elite encounter that they must save their resources for, but that will reward them with a powerful magic item. Afterwards, you're provided the opportunity to shop and level up.

On the fourth day, you will instead immediately fight the final boss, before ending the run.

Aside from the pool of boss fights, the encounters can appear at any level, dynamically scaling to provide maximum repeatability.

Whilst your save file won't be deleted on a death like many roguelikes, the game mode does track your deaths and restarts, marking your save file with a spooky skull icon if you die or have to restart an encounter, but otherwise can still be played normally for those looking for more of a softcore experience, or merely looking to compare who can get the least deaths while running through the campaign with less optimised parties!

Features
  • A randomly generate campaign, created from a fixed seed that will retain its state when loaded from a save file.
  • The run goes from levels 1-4. Level 1-3 consist of 2 regular encounters, a non-combat skill challenge and an elite 'mini-boss' fight. Level 4 has a single boss fight, randomly selected from a pool.
  • Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style Skill Challenge encounters that reward rare archetypes, items or boons to help you on your journey, and give purpose to some of the typically less useful skills in the game!
  • Dozens of new enemies, many with hand drawn artwork!
  • Hazard enemies that can be attacked or ignored at the player's discretion.
  • Diablo 3 style 'Treasure Demons' that randomly spawn in levels as an optional secondary objective.
  • Dozens of new magic items to be found on your adventures, only obtainable through random drops or as rewards for elite battles. (For balance reasons, these can be freely accessed during free encounter mode, but not in story mode)
  • Several miscellaneous player facing options, such as Duelling Spears, Light Hammers, Hatchets, Shuriken and the Thrower's Bandoleers magical item, that can be accessed in the base game.
  • The Monastic Weapon feat line for Monks to support a Shuriken, and several new monk weapons. Subscribe to Coopo's Tengu mod for even more options!

@Zateman
Ah, thank you, that was a great bug report ^^ It should be fixed in the next update!

There's a bug with the Thrower's Bandolier, if you change a ruin from another weapon to it, but decline the popup that requires money. You dupe the ruins onto it anyways.

This mod's great! Can't wait to see the level 5-8 expansion whenever that comes out.

Oh yeah, the toggles in the options menu are just for enabling the high difficulty setting in free encounter mode and hiding the failed run icon - the only way to try out the Rat Monarch in free encounter mode is to import a character from an Adventure Path that has met the requirements.

Well, there was a checkbox in the options about free encounter mode having access, but that didn't seem to enable me to use it

You'll have to keep exploring, but you're on the right track ^^

what is the prerequisite for the Rat Monarch? This sounds like fun but I can't figure out what stealing the power of the Rat Fiend means. Or is this only possible through random events?

@The Internet Janitor

I'm so glad you're enjoying my work ^^

A level 5-8 expansion is currently in the works as I plug away implementing new high level monsters, encounters, events and magic items. But it might be a little ways off with so much content to fill out ^^

You can see some of the new enemies under Roguelike (high level) in Free Encounter mode tho ^^

Loving this, would love to see it expanded with the expansion levels. This is much more replayable than the game's story campaign.

Thanks for the report! I don't think I ever would've spotted that one on my own t.t It should be fixed now as of the last update ^^
