Description
Type VIIc U-boat

The goal with this creation was to make the most realistic type VIIC uboat on the workshop and I think I did a pretty good job. Note that some systems are simplified for a more fun experience. Most of the systems are pretty intuitive but I still recommend reading the rest of the description especially if you want to learn how to use the torpedoes and the fire control system.

You will need a modded to workbench to load torpedoes using the selection grid or you can use a version of this sub which has 5 torpedoes preloaded.

Features

1. Realistic exterior.
2. Realistic interior.
3. Realistic fire control systems and weapons.
4. Realistic communication systems.
5. Hydrophone.
6. Deck gun.
7. AA gun.
8. Realistic engines.
9. Diving equipment.
10. Repair equipment.
11. Animated engines.
12. Realistic operation.
13. Realistic pump operation.
14. Realistic trim system.
15. Depth finder.
16. Crush depth

Startup

1. Power switches (one in the control room and the other in the stern torpedo room).
2. Close all of the cylinder taps on both engines.
3. Open the diesel intake, fuel valve and exhaust output valves in the engine room.
4. Open the starting air valve (under the engine throttles) and wait for the starting air manifold pressure to rise up to 20 atm then you can turn the starting air off.
5. Set the engine mode to the start position (number 3).
6. When the engines start set the engine mode to the run position (number 1) then increase the throttle slightly and engage the clutch fully.
7. Make sure to monitor the engine heat if it gets too high turn on the generators or lower the throttle.

Generators

1. Turn on the panel power on both e motor panels in the stern torpedo room.
2. Turn on the motor/generator power on the same e motor panels.
3. Make sure that the starting contactor is off.
4. If you have done it correctly the submarine will be slower and the engines should not overheat.

Diving

If you are playing in multiplayer it is recommended to turn on the alarm to notify the crew.
1. Open the fwd stern and ballast tank 3 vents.
2. If using the auto depth hold set the depth you want to hold (positive numbers) if not you will need to control the planes manually.
3. Close the diesel intake in the control room.
4. Close the air intake and exhaust valves in the control room.
5. Close the exhaust output valves in the engine room.
6. Turn on the e motors (set the throttle to about 0.6).
7. Take out the diesel engine clutch.
8. After diving, if the submarine is tilted up, you can blow Main ballast tank 1 or increase the throttle for the e motors.

Negative tanks

The type VII has 2 negative tanks these tanks were used to decrease the dive time for the sub. They were filled with water when on the surface and emptied at periscope depth. When you spawn in the ship they will be empty so on your first dive I recommend filling them up before you surface.

Usage

1. Open the flood valves (there are two one on the port and the other on the starboard side of the control room).
2. To fill them open the common venting valve on the port side of the control room.
3. To empty them open the common blowing valve on the starboard side (when blowing monitor the tank pressure, when you start blowing the pressure will increase and when its empty it will then suddenly drop).

Surfacing

1. Close the ballast vents.
2. Open the blow valve in the control room.
3. If using the auto depth hold set the depth to 0 to turn it off.
4. After surfacing open the valves that you closed before diving.
5. Start the diesel engines turn off the e motors.
6. If you need to start refilling the compressed air by turning on one of the compressors and start charging the battery's.
7. When the ship is floating normally you can stop blowing the tanks.
Note that when the diesels start you can use them to blow the rest of the water out from the tanks.
To do this open the exhaust blow valves and close the exhaust output valves. Then in the control room you can open the other exhaust blow valves and close the compressed air blow valves.

Torpedoes

When you spawn in the boat there will be no torpedoes loaded the reason why I did this was because I wanted to let people chose what and how many torpedoes they want to use.
Torpedoes were usually loaded in the torpedo tubes, under the front torpedo room floor, in the front and stern torpedo rooms. IRL they could carry up to 14 torpedoes, in Stormworks only 12 because I did not include external torpedo tubes.

Setup

1. Flood the torpedo tubes you want to use (open the torpedo tube vents, drain/fill valves and turn on the compressed air fill button).
2. Open the flooded torpedo tube doors.
3. Tell the fire control system in the control room under the chart table how you will use the torpedoes.
Select which sight you will be using attack periscope, UZO or observation periscope.
Tell the system which tubes you will be using front/stern.
Tell the system which torpedoes you will be using (if you set it to position 6 it will activate spread shot mode).
If firing a spread shot sellect the combination of tubes that you will be using.
Lastly select which trigger you will be using the trigger on the deck on the UZO column or the trigger inside the conning tower. You can use the manual firing levers on the torpedo tubes but you don't have to.
4. On the TDC in the conning tower turn on the optic follow up or set the heading manually although I would recommend just turning on the optic follow up.
5. Tell the TDC what tubes you will be using fwd or stern (if forward then leave the tube selector switch on the TDC off if stern turn it on).

Firing at a non moving target

1. Using the periscope or UZO look at the target or set the heading to the target.
2. Press the launch button.

Firing at a moving target

1. Enter the enemy targets speed kn.
2. Enter the enemy targets angle on bow.
3. Enter the enemy ships range hm.
4. Look at the target using the periscope or UZO or set the heading to the target.
5. Press the launch button.

Note that the AOB should be as close to 90 degrees as possible to get the most accurate hit so take your time to position your sub.
For a spread shot you will also need to set the enemy ships length.

Speed can be calculated by putting the periscope in front of the enemy ship then when the front of the ship passes the center vertical line start the timer. When the stern of the enemy ship passes over the same vertical line stop the timer. Then take the ships length and divide it by the time that the ship took after that take that value and multiply it by 1.8.

To figure out range you have a laser range finder it's not a realistic system but because I couldn't make an optical range finder I just went with it.

The easiest way to figure out the AOB is to imagine that you are on the enemy ship looking forward then you turn left or right to look at your sub the amount of degrees that you turn is the AOB. Because how I've done the system this value doesn't have to be very percise.

If you don't want to do any calculations you can just use the T IV or T V homing torpedoes.

Multiplayer

I have tried to optimize it as best as I could without taking out features but there is still some lag. High physics is recommended but medium will still work fine.
All of the lights inside the sub are spotlights so the lighting will be worse but in multiplayer the lights won't glitch through the walls of the submarine, thus not giving away your position.

Thank you very much!

All of the e motor controls are in the e motor/stern torpedo room.

First of all activate the main power, there are two key buttons to do so, one in the control room and the other in the stern torpedo/e motor room. After that activate the panel power for the e motor panels there are two separate switches for each panel, then turn on the motor/generator power switches one for each motor, finally turn on the starting contactor for each motor separately. After all of these steps increase the throttle.

Sorry to ask, but where do you find the e motor power button?

Make sure to turn on the e motor power. There are switches on the floor in the torpedo room to move the floor covers, make sure to move them one at a time.

is There a way to remove forward torpedo floor cover?

Make sure to pump water into the trim system before trying to move it from one tank to the other.
Markas  [author] Apr 5 @ 2:19am
Flooding the trims: open water inlet, main pump inlet, pump to trim system (stbd pump). Trim system connection, pump output connection, trim output connection (port pump). Open the trim valve and select which tank to pump water into forward or back. Turn on both pumps. All of this is done from the control room. After all of these steps you can check the level of water in the trim tanks from the fwd or stern torpedo rooms depending on the tank. Moving water from one tank to the other using compressed air: Turn on both trim direction buttons, open the trim valve, select which tank to send compressed air to to push the water out, open the compressed air valve. Moving water from one tank to the other using pumps: trim system connection, pump output connection, trim output connection (port pump). Open the trim valve, set the direction to pump water to, activate the port pump.
