The Devil's Meat Grinder 1916

This is the famous battle of Verdun. Fort Vaux, a rectangular fort to the southeast of Fort Douaumont, was only a quarter the size of Fort Douaumont and the smallest of verdun's fortifications. But the fort, made up of one disabled soldier, cost the Germans nearly 3,000 casualties in seven days of fighting.
The Germans stormed in the early hours of June 2, 1916, braving machine-gun fire as they approached the outer wall. At about 0500 hours, the machine-gun fortification in the northeast of Fort Vaux was destroyed. A Group of German troops jumped into the trench inside the wall through the collapse. After several hours of persistence, they found a hole in the top of the fort that had been blasted and not fully repaired.
All day June 3, fighting continued inside the fort. The only light is from gun fire and grenade explosions, accompanied by deafening echoes. Bullets and shrapnel flying around or splashing the walls. Or instantly make a life that was once alive and bloody. With no time or space to properly house the dead, the stench of the enclosed space, coupled with explosive smoke and concrete dust, almost silenced the combatants. The French army in extremely difficult fighting conditions are still determined to stick to the fort, and finally because of the severe water shortage of the French army had to surrender to the German army.
