Description
The 205 Series (205系) is an EMU operated by JR East and JR West on suburban lines.

Originally designed by Japanese National Railways, the 205 series is a mass production vehicle type for large urban areas. First introduced in 1985, the type feature significant energy and production cost savings compared to the previous 103 and 201 series. Manufacture of the 205 series was continued by both JR companies after privatization, and the type served on a large number of lines in Kantō and Kansai regions, such as the Yamanote Line, Yokohama Line and Hanwa Line. A total of 1461 cars were manufactured in a large number of variants. By the 2000s however, newer types such as the E231, and E233 series began displacing the 205 series in Greater Tokyo. In the decade after, JR East had retired the type from most secondary lines in Kantō as well. JR West had also replaced its stock with the 233, 235 and 321 series by the late 2010s on most services. As of current, JR East operates the modified 4-car 3100 variant on the Senseki Line in Miyagi prefecture, as well as a single 2-car set as a reserve vehicle on the Nambu Branch Line, with full withdrawal expected within the next couple of years. As for JR West, a refurbished 4-car variant runs on the Nara Line, with no current plan of replacement. In total, around 150 cars remain on scheduled operations in Japan. 821 cars were sold to KAI Commuter in Indonesia from 2013-2018, serving the commuter lines of Jakarta. A few modified sets were also sold to Fuji Kyuko and became the Fujikyu 6000 series.
