China Railway HXD3C/HXD3CA Electric Locomotive

The medium- and long-term railway planning in 2004 prompted China's rolling stock manufacturers to introduce and absorb advanced foreign technologies to improve the performance of their own products. In 2004, Dalian Locomotive Factory found Japan's Toshiba Corporation and cooperated with them to develop the HXD3 electric locomotive. In 2007, it cooperated with Canada's Bombardier Company to develop the HXD3B electric locomotive. By absorbing and combining the results of cooperation with two foreign companies, Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Factory launched the HXD3C electric locomotive in 2010. Although some characteristics indicate that it is actually more suitable as a freight locomotive, in order to adapt to the needs of the transformation of passenger train power supply system, HXD3C is equipped with a DC600V power supply device and used as a passenger locomotive. This power supply device can directly obtain power from the power grid. After rectification, it is sent to buses to provide power for lighting and air conditioning.
HXD3C is an economical and successful passenger electric locomotive. Its output reaches more than 1,000 units. It is distributed in almost every province in China and can be seen in almost all electric locomotive depots responsible for passenger transportation. In practical applications, it is generally used to tow express passenger trains with a speed of 120Km/h.

Locomotive HXD3C 0179
Attached to the Chengdu Locomotive Depot in Chengdu. Equipped with DC600V power supply device .


Locomotive HXD3C 0121
Belongs to the Hefei locomotive depot of Shanghai Railway Bureau. The power supply system has been modified to provide either 600V DC or 380V AC power, and two green power sockets have been added to the front end. This renovation is to provide power for the newly launched cold chain container trains of the railway bureau.


Locomotive HXD3C 0194
Belonging to Jinan Railway Bureau Jinan Locomotive Depot. The power supply system has been modified to provide either 600V DC or 380V AC power, and two green power sockets have been added to the front end. This renovation is to fully utilize the AC380V standard passenger cars owned by the railway bureau. AC380V passenger cars generally require the use of air-conditioned generator cars for power supply, and only a few locomotives have the ability to supply 380V AC power.


After the success of the HXD3C electric locomotive, the railway department began to consider returning it to its original design purpose - a high-power six-axis AC drive electric locomotive. Therefore, in 2012, Beijing Erqi Factory removed the power supply device of the HXD3C electric locomotive and increased the axle load to meet the needs of freight transportation. The locomotive after the design changes was finalized as HXD3CA. This locomotive is jointly produced by Dalian Factory, Erqi Factory and Datong Factory.

Locomotive HXD3CA 6018
Belonging to Mudanjiang locomotive depot of Harbin Railway Bureau. The HXD3CA locomotive with the serial number 6XXX is produced by Beijing Erqi Factory. The DC600V power supply system and centralized control system of this type of locomotive have been removed.


Locomotive HXD3CA 8250
Belonging to the Xinfeng Town locomotive depot of Xi'an Railway Bureau. The HXD3CA locomotive with the serial number 8XXX is produced by Dalian factory. The DC600V power supply system and centralized control system of this type of locomotive have been removed. Xi'an Railway Bureau prefers to write slogans or advertisements on the side facades of its locomotives.


Locomotive HXD3CA 7563
Purchased by Laos China Railway Company to connect Laos with China on the Mowan Railway. All the signs on the locomotive are in Lao and Chinese. The logo on the front end of the locomotive has been changed to the LCR lettering of China Railway Company, and the grid style below it has also been changed.
