Every time your character dies, you have the option to select a new character (with the Choose Your Character + mod), but you always have to play as an openly pagan character, and you either need to play as a character from a dynasty you've already played as or start a fresh dynasty as any count-tier pagan. So, for example, you could play a few generations as Germanic pagans and reform the religion, then choose an African count and start building up a new dynasty. Then, decades later, you could switch to a Germanic king from your original dynasty or something.
I basically use this mod so that I can keep track of what characters are descended from my founding characters, and thus what characters are available for me to play as.
to prevent unification
Also as a pro tip for everyone here, using SteamCMD (which is an official Steam tool) you can download any mod for any game manually, it's just less user friendly.
