[1.7 Big Update!] Historically Accurate Randomize Farming Yields

Beskrivning
HARF - Historically Accurate Randomized Farming. Have you ever wondered where all the good and bad harvests have gone? Do you want to randomly get famines and bountiful harvests? Do you want to reject the safety of steady time averaged yields? Then this is the mod for you!

SAVE GAME COMPATIBLE, compatible with most mods (even total overhauls!), all languages, and causes no noticeable lag, can be removed without ruining a save, not ironman compatible.

1.7 Strategic Regions Update!
As of 25 June 2024 mod is now updated to apply randomized yields across entire strategic regions representing large scale climate conditions with reasonable accuracy as well as local effects. Credit to Gracchus for figuring out strategic regions. Check out his mod HMPS which also applies a similar randomized effect to mines. Because the same code is used in both you should only launch HMPS and disable this mod.

How does it work:
Every year, each state gets a randomized modifier to agricultural throughput. I went though great lengths to ensure that the randomness isn't arbitrary and matches historical data. The mod mostly just runs in the background updating the modifiers once a year. To my surprise this doesn't actually cause any noticeable lag at all, a single battle seems to take up more calculations than this mod does in a year.

How accurate is historically accurate:
The data used is very accurate to European and Northern American climates in 1800-1936. Yield per acre was largely constant in this whole period for all places only starting to increase with scientific farming in the 1930-40. The variation does seem roughly constant over the entire period of Victoria 3. Known issues are that while this mod currently works very well for modeling temperate climates; tropical, arid, tundra, and subtropical climates have completely different patterns. Keen eyed players will notice livestock ranches are excluded from the year-to-year variation. Future updates are in the work for correcting the values based on local climates. This is on purpose because data shows that herding has little year-to-year variation.

Know issues:
  • Saving and restarting the game may cause some states to get multiple throughput bonuses. This will be temporary and go away in 1 year.
  • Fixed! The variation mostly washes itself out except for small countries. An upcoming fix is to make states in the same strategic region have similar values.

Planned Updates:
  • In the mod right now! Strategic regions will have closely correlated values. So for example instead of Alabama, Georgia, and Florida having independent throughput values, each will have a local component and a shared component for the Dixie strategic region.
  • Better accuracy for non-temperate climates. The method being worked on will avoid hard-coding values so that the mod can work with any changes in the map or fantasy maps.
Changes to make the variation slightly decrease over time as countries get better technology. These changes will be more applicable to mods running outside of Victoria 3's normal time window.

I have no doubt that this mod influenced the implementation of harvest conditions in Vanilla.

is tthis 1.8 compat or doesit not work since the food update?

epic mod

also fish are way better in this mod because they represent a more consistent source of food that isn't affected by harvest shortages

Or just use the Encourage Agricultural degree

@yeehaw All you have to do is build some rice farms early on in the game or puppet someone and use them as your bread basket

yeah japan is nearly unplayable, SOL rocks up/down so much that its inevitable at least 1/3rd of your pop becomes radicals and you suffer endless turmoil

I will say Krakatoa might be double counted in the mod - it already decreased farming yields in that time period. Might be better to replace it with just extra variation for that year? Not sure tbh

I've thought about it and im split on Krakatoa + a -40% debuff being a bug or mechanics working as intended. You do have to be very unlucky to get both at the same time

that just sounds like fun to me, good excuse to get corn laws
