the back of the headlight has the G8001 livery on it.
The G-8001 numberplate on the smokebox is so big because that's how the Japanese identify their steam locomotives. The plates denote the class of the locomotive as well as which individual loco it is among the class
For example, the 999's locomotive bears the designation C-6248. Decoded, that means it's a C-62 class locomotive, and 48 means it's the 48th one of the class.
For Big One, it's a G-8000 class locomotive, number 1 of the class. The 001 on the tender is the SDF/Galaxy Railways ID number. It's a bit of a flub on the part of the show-runners, as if we take into consideration the first Big One was destroyed in the first series of the Galaxy Railways, even as a rebuild/upgrade this Big One is actually the second locomotive/ship to bear the name, so the numberplate ought to read G-8002.
