This mod disables farming during winter. It also makes several changes to the food preservation system so that winter survival should still be possible when it comes to food supply. For example, your jars will last longer and it is possible to make jars by using only vegetables and water. For a detailed description of the mod's features, see below.

The goal of the mod is to make food supply during winter more realistic and at the same time more difficult. The changes to the food preservation system should still allow for a yearslong survival.

Main features of the mod:

The new farming system:

- Farming during winter is not possible anymore.
- You can only farm during the growing season which lasts from April to October where the exact dates are randomized (this is roughly in accordance with real-life Kentucky growing seasons).
- When the growing season is over, all your crops will die. Sowing outside the growing season will have no effect and you lose the seeds.
- With higher farming skill, you will see more information about the current growing season in farming-related tooltips and menus (see screenshots for some examples). You need at least farming skill 2 to see some of the information.

The new food preservation system:

- Basic canning is now possible using only water and vegetables (there are additional canning options where sugar or vinegar can be used, see below). You still need empty jars, jar lids and the jars have to be cooked to preserve them.
- Jars will last longer depending on your cooking skill: Default durability is 90 days including 60 days fresh. Each cooking skill point gives 30 additional days including 20 days fresh.
- When you open a jar, you'll receive a jar lid which can be reused. Consuming or emptying a jar gives a reusable empty jar.
- After a jar has been opened, it is not preserved anymore and will expire in a few days.

New canning options:

There are three different types of food preservation: basic canning, pickling and making fruit jams. Here are the recipes showing what you need:

- Basic canning: vegetables (for example 5 broccoli or 2 cabbages), water
- Pickling: vegetables, vinegar
- Fruit jams: strawberries or foraged berries, sugar

In every case, you need an empty jar, a jar lid and the jar has to be cooked in order to preserve it. You cannot create jars from rotten food.
Pickles and fruit jams give various boni (longer durability when opened, higher nutritional values, boredom or unhappiness reduction).

Additional features of the mod:

Here are some smaller features of the mod, some of them "quality of life". I tried to implement them being as intuitive and self-explanatory as possible so that they are hopefully clear from just playing the game without thinking too much about them. Fyi, I list them anyway:

- WIth a farming skill of at least 2, you will see some infos about the growing season in farming-related menus and tooltips (see screenshots for some examples). More infos become available as your farming skill increases. Farmer profession can see all the infos from start. Since some elements of the farming system are randomized, some of the infos may not be 100% accurate.
- Higher cooking skill results in more valuable jars (the effect only takes place after the jars have been cooked).
- The tooltip of a jar will show its expiry date (see screenshots; expiry date is only shown after the jar has been cooked).
- Increased spawn rate for empty jars and jar lids.
- Stale/poisonous food will result in stale/poisonous jars. Using tainted water when canning will also result in poisonous jars.
- Some changes to the poison detection system: Whenever you craft a food item and know that an ingredient is poisonous, you will also know that the resulting food item is poisonous. (Vanilla game behaves in my opinion a bit inconsistent here.)
- The jars can be used in various cooking recipes.
- Content of jars can be used for trapping provided it can also be used for trapping in the vanilla game. This does not apply to pickles or fruit jams (only works for normal jars).
- Content of rotten jars can be added to a composter. Just right click the composter when you have rotten jars in your inventory and have a look at the options. You'll keep the empty jars and the jar lids.
- Some vanilla items like peanut butter or marinara will now also give jar lids and empty jars when opened and consumed. You have to open them before you can eat them.
- Cabbage has been nerfed: With the default settings, it now has a growth time of approx. 28 days (vanilla is approx. 14 days).
- Increased farming xp gain when playing with farming speed set to "Slow" or "Very slow" (default speed setting is "Normal"). Vanilla game gives the same amount of xp on any farming speed so I thought this is a fair deal.

Compatibility:

- works with singleplayer in 41.78; not compatible with build 42 (maybe I make some of the mod's features available for B42 in the future)

- multiplayer: use at your own risk when playing multiplayer; I did a few test runs as a host and it seems to work but I have no idea how the mod behaves when other players are around; since I am not an excessive multiplayer by myself, I cannot say a lot about the topic

- compatibility with other mods: chances are good that most mods which do not touch the farming or canning system are fine; mods changing canning or farming system may cause problems (mods only adding new crop types should work though); there could also be problems with mods changing the user interface (for example, there is a confirmed incompatibility with the mod "Nested Containers")

- languages: English, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian (thanks to various steam users for contributing translations)

- mod version: 1.1.1

Bugs/Problems:

Feel free to report in the comments or the discussion section.

Similar Mods:

Some of the mod's features like giving back jar lids when opening a jar or increasing jar durability are also present in other mods, for example "Food Preservation Buff" or "Turk's Lasting Jarred Foodstuffs". The exact working of this mod is still quite different from the other mods (for example: durability is scaled with cooking skill, opening a jar results in an item called "Opened jar of...", all the new features related to the farming system etc.).

@razab I haven't noticed any error messages but will pay extra attention to see if anything comes up. Is there an error log file I can look for?
razab  [ophavsmand] 18. juni kl. 8:27
@PrestigeWorldwide

So far I wasn't able to reproduce the error in my game but I keep going investigating.

Btw does your game throws any error messages while playing (the red little error box bottom right on your screen)?

@razab thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I had 200+ seeds in main inventory. Tried packaging and unpacking and it has no effect.
I am subscribed to the mod so assuming I have the latest version.
I will also search for more seeds for other veggies and see if just is a radish problem.

@PrestigeWorldwide, thanks for the report. I'll investigate the issue.

For sowing radishes, do you have at least six radish seeds in your inventory? Beacuse for sowing them, you need at least 6 seeds (thats already a feature in the vanilla game which my mod does not change).

Also, make sure that you play with the current version of the mod. In previous versions, there was a problem with the radish jars but this has been fixed in an update. Maybe your are playing a super old save which you have started before the update (before march, 2024)?

Anyway, I'll still check whether I can reproduce any of the problems you reported.

Problem with planting. Grew and harvested broccoli and radishes to seed bearing stage. When went to replant, only broccoli seeds were selectable. Tried packaging and unpackaging radish seeds. No luck.
Also, preserved radishes in jar. Ate from jar but contents wouldn't empty, no nutritional value after some point. Again, only happened with radishes and not broccoli. Pouring out contents returned empty jar.
41.78; this is only farming mod used. Was August.
Is this expected? Also, if I unsubscribe from mod, is there likelihood to corrupt save file?

Gimbo 10. okt. 2024 kl. 14:10
i mean if every veggie have a specific month
razab  [ophavsmand] 9. okt. 2024 kl. 22:25
@Gimbo, wdym? Have you tried my mod and was it possible to grow tomatoes in October?

The farming season should end in October but it may end during the last days (exact day when season ends is randomized). So it may be possible that you can sow tomatoes during October.
Gimbo 8. okt. 2024 kl. 16:32
