History:
Damat is an ancient kingdom that spanned the present northern region of Ethiopia. Appeared around the tenth century BC. AD, it lasted until the 5th century BC. There are very few archaeological traces of this kingdom. The only known inscriptions of the kings of D'mt include references to kings reigning at the same time in the Sabaean kingdom. Located around Yeha (considered to be the capital) in northern Ethiopia, the kingdom seems to have had very close relations with the Sabaean kingdom in Yemen. Some modern historians consider, however, that the D'mt civilization was indigenous and would have undergone little Sabaean influence, while others believe that it would be a mixture between the dominant Sabaean culture and an indigenous culture. However, it is now almost certain that the Ge'ez language, the language of northern Ethiopia, does not come from the Sabaean language. The kingdom of D'mt used irrigation methods although minor, cultivated millet, and already worked iron to forge its own tools and weapons. The remains of an important temple dating from around 700 BC. AD have been preserved at Yeha, near Aksum. The transition from D'mt to the kingdom of Aksum remains still relatively little understood today. After the fall of the D'mt kingdom in the 5th century BC. AD, the plateaus of Ethiopia were dominated by much less influential kingdoms until the emergence of the Kingdom of Aksum in the 1st century BC. J.-C. which dominated the whole region.
