Introducing sexual dimorphism to RimWorld.

I hold Tynan personally responsible for this failure on his part. Clearly this should have been put in the base game 30 updates ago, but we can't expect God to do all the work. In a sim game as in-depth as RimWorld it's extremely disappointing and boring to discover that with regards to gameplay, male and female pawns are completely identical. Sex Matters is that last missing piece of immersion that RimWorld needs.

disclaimer: this mod's presentation is exaggerated for dramatic and comedic effect. I have great respect for Tynan for creating the only game of this kind and sticking to his vision. The lack of sexual dimorphism however is a huge oversight.

The RimWorld engine has big limitations that don't allow for too much complexity without serious overhaul. This mod tries to be simple and compatible so I work with what I have. The two sexes are asymmetrical on purpose in this mod. It makes you think about them as distinct groups, instead of a samey mass of grey mush.
This mod is a constant work in progress. If you find any game-ending cracks in the game balance you're free to leave a comment. Please report bugs in the dedicated discussion thread.









This is a mod that's light on code, so it should be compatible with almost everything, but you are warned: Sex Matters fundamentally overhauls how the game is played since male and female pawns are naturally differentiated.

Heavily Recommended Mods
  • Combat Readiness Check for a more balanced threat scaling that takes into account how many combat capable pawns you actually have
  • Any mod that adds pregnancy and children

Features List
Main Features:
- The Female Presence system
* maintaining a 1:1 gender ratio in your colony is optimal to give decent mood benefits to male pawns and avoiding severe debuffs. Having a majority of female pawns will ensure an even bigger mood buff, but this could easily attract bigger raids you lack the manpower to defend against.
* Men in relationships, as well as the following traits are immune to the moodlets: Gay, Asexual, Psychopath, Ascetic, Misogynist
- The "Female Presence" precept - with ideology installed female presence becomes dictated by a precept
* "Desired" is the default setting; it demands that you stay close or above a 1:1 ratio to avoid suffering mood penalties
* "Appreciated" is a toned down variation of "Desired"; Exclusive to Male Supremacy; Great for sausage fest raider colonies
* "Ignored" reverts things back to vanilla and applies no moodlets based on female presence; Exclusive to Male Supremacy; Good choice for monk colonies
* "Essential" is an extreme variation of "Desired"; Limited to Male and Female Supremacy; Perfect for matriarchies and family-oriented Christian colonies

General changes:
- Adjusted male spawn rate for raids to 90% (adjustable in options)
- Adjusted male spawn rate for military aid to 93%
- Wimp trait balanced in accordance with the pain treshold of both male and female pawns

Changes made to female pawns:
- Social skill is learned at x1.4 of vanilla speed
- Mining and Construction are learned at x0.9
- Melee and shooting are learned at half the rate
- Negotiation ability is 150% of vanilla
- Social impact is 150% of vanilla
- Melee hit chance and dodge chance reduced to 50%
- Shooting accuracy is 70% of vanilla
- Aiming time is 150% of vanilla
- Incoming damage raised to 110%
- Base immunity gain speed is 125%
- Hunger rate is two thirds that of male pawns
- Medical tend speed is boosted to x1.4 while tend quality is at x1.2
- Operation speed is 60%, while surgery success chance is 70% of vanilla
- Plant and animal harvest yield is buffed to 125%
- Food foraged while caravaning is buffed to 125%
- Lowered base construction speed, mining speed, mining yield, construction success chance, and repair success chance to 75% of vanilla
- General labour speed is 110% that of men
- minimum comfortable temperature raised by 3°C
- carrying capacity reduced by 20 units
- Pain shock treshold is 15% easier to reach
- Mental break treshold is 5% easier to reach
- Arrest chance is 50% that of men
- (Ideology) Suppression power is 50% that of men
- (Ideology) Certainty loss factor is x3 that of men
- (CE) Carry weight reduced by 10 units
- (CE) Carry bulk reduced by 5 units
- (CE) Base reload speed nerfed to 90%
- (CE) Base aiming accuracy nerfed to 70%
- (CE) Suppressability is x2 that of male pawns
- (CE) Melee critical chance, melee parry chance, and unarmed damage are 50% that of male pawns

Changes made to male pawns:
- Social skill is learned at x0.85 of vanilla speed

  • any mod that heavily modifies and unbalances pawn stats.
  • game modes that use steep vanilla wealth-based threat scaling are going to be more difficult to play (for an alternative see: Combat Readiness Check)


Q: Is this mod mandatory?
A: It is.

Q: Who is this mod for?
A: Players who love to immerse themselves in their colonies. It enhances roleplaying greatly, even on mid-to-high difficulties.

Q: Who is this mod not suited for?
A: Losing is fun Igor Invader minmaxer masochist players.

Q: Why did you make women so weak in combat? I want them to be able to fight.
A: Sex matters changes the sexes so that each functions uniquely within RimWorld. If you don't like it then the mod is not for you.

Q: So is this supposed to make women a pain in the ass?
A: No. It reoptimizes women to be more useful in support roles. If you leverage their qualities well they will perform great. If you try to use them as the spearhead of your army they will let you down hard.

A: Doesn't this make it much harder to maintain a single-sex colony?
D: Yes. The mod encourages you to make colonies that consist of both sexes.

Q: I have a female supremacy colony. Doesn't this mod completely clash with that?
A: On the contrary. If you think about it for more than two seconds, this mod elevates both male and female supremacy colonies into all-time masterpieces of gaming. Try it for yourself and you might figure out how matriarchies work in real life.

Q: CE compatible?
A: Yes.

Q: Does this work on alien races?
A: This mod only affects humans, which was done to avoid breaking other races with all the stat changes it makes.
