Alaska Railroad F40PH Pack

Description
(Requires Microcosmologist's F40PH Metra 157 'City of Palatine').

Alongside the 15 GP40-2s, eight GP38-2s and 28 SD70MACs, the Alaska Railroad also has a pair of F40PHs.

ARR 31 and 32 were built by EMD in 1977, originally for Amtrak as their numbers 244 and 268 respectively. The two engines served with Amtrak until the early 2000s, when they would have been replaced by General Electric P40DCs, P42DCs and possibly P32AC-DMs as well.

244 and 268 were sold to the Alaska Railroad in 2003, and converted into ‘caper cars’ (CAb and PowER) by National Railway Equipment Co. in Illinois. They are similar to Amtrak’s Non-Powered Control Units, except that the former engine room isn’t used for storing luggage. Instead, there is a head-end power generator in there.

Nowadays the two former F40PHs are used in push-pull service on the Alaska Railroad’s passenger trains, such as the Glacier Discovery. This service runs from Anchorage to Grandview (plus a detour down the Whittier branch).
