Jozef's Split Etruria

In 1 collection by Jozef
Jozef's immersion mods
3 items
Description
  • Splits Etruria up into several city-states
  • Adds a custom flag for Vatluna, more custom flags are planned
  • Adds modifiers to certain cities, for example a modifier in Tarchna referencing the creation myth of the Etrusca Disciplina
  • Adds a decision allowing for the foundation of Etruria with sufficient cities

Recommended companion mod: Jozef's Immersive Etruria mod (Etruscans get no Latin names, Etruscan office titles, a Tyrsenian culture group, more Etruscan city names and more).

When using both, be sure to put Jozef's Immersive Etruria above Jozef's Split Etruria in your playset.

Split Etruria
People familiar with Roman historiography will likely have heard of the annual meetings at the Fanum Voltumnae, where the leaders of the Etruscan League would come together for a religious festival and to make political decisions. There, they would also elect a common leader, likely known in Etruscan as the "Zilath Cechaneri" ("Leader for the Higher Things").

This existence of an Etruscan League seems to imply some form of union of Etruscan cities, which may be why they are represented as a single "Etruria" in this game. Reality was more complicated, however. The Etruscan cities were far from forming a "perfect union"; if anything, the Etruscan League was a very loose coalition with continually changing members, which could also wage war amongst eachother. Considering this, it is entirely ahistorical to depict Etruria as a single cohesive unit.

A better solution I came up with earlier, was to represent the Etruscan League by having all cities be the subject of Velzna (where the Fanum was located), with a new subject type that allows the subjects to freely declare war. Sadly, this seems impossible: while 00_default.exe in the folder common/subject_types does contain the option "has_limited_diplomacy = yes", changing this to "no" doesn't do anything. As such, this mod is, in my opinion, at least a better representation than vanilla: simply a collection of city states that will form defensive leagues and alliances, and also wage war.

Alalia is added as a puppet of Fufluna. I'm not sure if this works very well, I'm open to suggestions.

Current city-states with (more or less) custom flags:

  • Fufluna: a golden lion head on a blue background (the lion head included in this game seems inspired by this[www.wildwinds.com] Etruscan coin design, so it fits very well).
  • Velathri: a golden head of Culsans/Janus on a white background (I tried to make my own based on this[upload.wikimedia.org] coin from Velathri, but it didn't come out very well so I just went with the vanilla Janus head design).
  • Vatluna: two silver dolphins upon a golden triskelion and two dots, within a silver circle; all on a green background (custom, based on this[imgc.allpostersimages.com] coin design from Vatluna).
  • Pisna: a silver squid on a light green background (based on this[static.deamoneta.com] coin design).

Planned custom flag designs:

  • Tarchna: a sea-monster in some metal, upon a red background (based on this[www.wildwinds.com] coin design)
  • Cisra: five golden lions upon a blue background (based on this[upload.wikimedia.org] fibula from the Regolini-Galassi tomb).
  • Velzna: a golden head of Tinia (actually, I think it's supposed to be Apollo, but I'll pretend it's Tinia) upon a purple background (based on this[upload.wikimedia.org] coin design).
  • Velcal: either a silver lasa (a figure with wings) upon a yellow background, or a silver wheel (based on this[www.numisbids.com] coin design).
  • Either Curtun or Aritim: the head of a Netśvis regardant upon the corresponding colour (based on this[archeologiavocidalpassato.files.wordpress.com] coin design).

Further to do
  • Improve the decision to found Etruria
  • Add additional modifiers to certain cities

Excellent mod! I implemented it into (a slightly customised) Invictus.

You're the man lol. Been looking on how to make a gameplay with one of Northern Latium's provinces, tried doing it myself but I'm lazy, and that is a work that requires patience. I dont know if it's still being updated, but if not I'll just revert the game version, can't play without this. Thx

Nevermind: I based it on a map of the territories of Etruscan city states (figure 18.1) in The Etruscan World , edited by Jean Macintosh Turfa. Though, this in turn seems to have based it on the location of Campo Della Fiera. The bend of the river suggests Velzna would be right on the border between my current Velzna province and Vesnth.

I based the location of Velzna on that of the Campo Della Fiera archeological site, the supposed remnants of the Fanum Voltumnae: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Campo+Della+Fiera.+Sito+Archeologico/@42.8576023,12.1461581,10z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x132ecd167288f787:0xb2a759c58a68495a!8m2!3d42.7124488!4d12.0962772

Looking at the lakes, admittedly that may place Velzna more in the Vesnth province than in the current Velzna one, but certainly not in Icuvium.

On the name, I decided to stick with "Etruria" as it's the name used in English, which is consistent with the rest of the game.

About founding "Etruria" ...
I stumbled recently over an alternative:

"Dodekapoli"

This was in ancient times a name for a association of 12 etruscan cities.
A real etruscan name, although ancient, but not this, raped by romans, name. Our "Etruscan" comes from the latin "Tuscii" after all.

There is just 1 problem. There exists allready a province with a similar name in the game.
Theres clearly a change needed in order to avoid missunderstandings.
Swap the names, i would say. Call the province "Etruria" and the formable nation "Dodekapoli". That would also make sense for the roman players.

And another thing:
The capital.

It was Volsinii. The etruscan name is Velzna.

Its still not entirely clear where it was located at.
Suspicions suggest that it was in modern day Orvieto.
The latest archaeological findings made it pretty clear. They found something what they consider a sanctuary. The Fanum Voltumnae to be precise.
But still, just suspisions. But better then anything else.
And that would be in Umbria, Icuvium in game.
So you had to relocate the city/nation.

I hope this helps to make the game/your mod much more immersive.

In the beginning, the "zilaths" are presumed to have resembled kings, but over time they became elected positions, or at least had terms.

Some Etruscan city states switched back to monarchy (I think it was Veii in any case), and came into disfavour among the others because of it.
