USS Iowa has it in between two barbettes, while in the later HMS Ark Royal the ward sits right under the hangar (whose decks might be armored), probably also next to the armor belt.
It depends on the armor to completely stop the incoming projectiles, or risk taking catastrophic damage if ricochet happens and the shell explodes inside. Armor is not a perfect solution and it adds weight considerably, so I was conflicted at the time. For the successor class I later decided to just put it near the hangar without armoring it.
@Jetli All thanks to Iowa class' schematics. Revolution class is based on battleships and carriers from several nations though, like Bismarck and the proposed H-class , the drafted french Alsace , Midway , Audacious , and maybe the Yamato and King George V as well.
