Herod

Description
The Herod mod makes it possible to form Israel as either Judea or Samaria, and includes various related historical adjustments to the region.

• Israel can be formed by either Judea or Samaria
• Palestine region renamed to Judea, as the province of Judea isn't renamed to Palestine by Rome until over a century after the game's timeline.
• Arabia Petra renamed to Idumea
• Province borders changed
• Idumeans added
• Nabateans are now Arabic
• The Second Temple can now be re-dedicated once Judea or Samaria are no longer tributary states
• The Second Temple can now be expanded
• Minor flavour text additions (military units, character names)

It sounds like this game Mod created a new culture, the Idumeans, in addition to the cultures already present. I don't know if this is a good design choice, because the original game's play strategies and mechanics might have been designed with only a more limited number of cultures in mind. Plus, making a new Idumean culture might not have been necessary. Perhaps the gamer can imagine that for practical purposes the Idumeans are a subset of the Nabatean culture in the game, even if technically that is not the case historically.

This Mod seems to be currently broken, probably due to updates in the base game. This Mod was last updated in April 2019. It's January 2023, and when I load my game with this Mod Enabled as the only Mod turned on, my game crashes.

I am curious how exactly you are supposed to "form" Israel as the game player. For example, if you are Judea and conquer Samaria, does a popup message ask you whether you want to change your kingdom's name from Judea to Israel?

I am also curious how you rededicate or expand the Second Temple. In the game, Temples automatically expand to cover a total of 3 levels depending on whether they are in a metropolis or city.

@Lukebentze,
The Samaritans had adopted "Hebrew culture" and a Torah-only version of the Israelite religion by the time that the game started in 304 BC. The Sadduccees in Jerusalem are also typically be considered to have a Torah-only version of Judaism. HIstorically, the Samaritans included Israelites from the northern "Lost" 10 Tribes.

I made a mod where you can form Israel, but the main trouble is I am just learning how to do missions and events. So I don't know how to do a lot of the stuff done for this mod. I much rather this mod than my own.

please update. I was interested into using the mod, but I would have really liked using it. I tried making such a mod for myself a while back, but I couldn't figure it out. Anyhow, if you could fix it.

Actually, historically the Samaritans were indeed the descendants of the Israelites. Only their elite were deported by the Assyrians in 723 BC, and were replaced by others. Most commoners remained put and continued to worship Yahweh. Eventually, the descendants of the elite returned and became local Governors—the Sanballat dynasty in c.450 BC, and they were the ones who built a temple to Yahweh on Mt Gerizim. They were categorised as foreigners by their opponents in Jerusalem, but this was mainly caricature. The equivalent the other way would be to characterise Zerubbabel as Babylonian. The Judeans and Samaritans shared a lot of culture and were actively involved with each other. There was even an attempt to reunite them in c. 350 BC during a hiatus in Persian hegemony (the book of Malachi and Zechariah 11 is about this). It didn't last, though. In any case, it is indeed historically accurate to label the Samaritans as a Hebrew culture.

@{T. Laticlavius} EmperorDastaann I dont know how much you know of Biblical History but I know this. The Jews were rather extremely racist to the Samaritans because of how they were technically illegitimate jews. mixed blood. Jews didn't like that. I think however it is better for Paradox to call them a Hebrew nation because them adopting much of Jewish culture and Judaism would make them more Hebrew than Assyrian at this point.
