Description
This guy is a Thomas & Friends character who first appeared in the film Journey Beyond Sodor. He is based on the London & South Western Railway N15 or 'King Arthur' class. Specifically 783 'Sir Gillimere', who was fitted with three funnels during World War 2, in an attempt to make the locomotive's smoke and steam hang around above the engine, making it less visible to enemy aircraft. Merlin's biggest character trait is that he thinks he can turn invisible, just by saying 'Invisibility On' and wheeshing lots of steam.

In real life, there was actually a King Arthur class locomotive named Merlin. Except the real Merlin was number 740 (British Railways number 30740). The character Merlin carries the number 783, which I guess is a reference to Sir Gillimere. There is only one N15 preserved in real life, although this one was built after 1923, when the London & South Western Railway was merged with several other companies to form the Southern Railway. The preserved N15 (King Arthur) is 777 'Sir Lamiel' (British Railways number 30777).

My interpretation of Merlin has also appeared in a video by Frantic:
