Controller Support for RimWorld - (Injury/Disability Friendly)

Description
Welcome, please read more about how to enable flawless controller support to your game.

Currently supporting Rimworld with an Xbox One/360 controller.
[Next Update will be including: PS4 controller support.]

The benefits are worthwhile:
-Great for people with injuries and disabilities who find a controller easier to use than a keyboard and mouse.
-You can play on a comfortable couch, chair, or in bed.
-You can play on a big TV with a wireless or wired controller, with HDMI input.
-You can stream this to compatible devices, and play anywhere you like.
-You can try using VR, with the benefit of no awkwardly finding the right keys on the keyboard. It's all in your hands on a straight forward controller setup.
-It's compatible with Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox One Elite (with paddles) controllers.
-This will now never need any updating, and is compatible with any and all Rimworld mods.

It's a straight forward, fluid, responsive setup that WORKS. You can even customize this to your own liking.

Save money with Controller Companion ($3) v Xpadder for $10.

Here's the details on how to get it working:

First, you'll need to download 'Controller Companion' (CC) from Steam. CC application doesn't support the extra insertable paddles on the back of the Xbox One Elite Controllers, but stay with me, there's a link below if you are hoping to do so...

You can download 'Controller Companion' from here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/367670/Controller_Companion/.
If you're looking to use an Xbox One Elite controller, try this application instead - https://www.rewasd.com/

Secondly, subscribe to this Workshop item once you've successfully installed 'Controller Companion'. Next, you'll just need to follow the instructions below, in order to get the most out of this.

Photos of the layout included in this Workshop item are included, please peruse.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Instructions to set it up properly:

1. Once you've installed Controller Companion (CC), and subscribed to this Workshop Item, follow the next steps.
2. This Workshop Item requires the Steam Big Picture utilisation of the Guide button to be DISABLED under your Steam application 'Controller' settings, and also in 'Controller Companion' settings too.
3. Open Controller Companion settings, and choose 'Profiles'. Then, under [/i]'Desktop' choose EDIT BINDINGS. Click on it, and it'll open up a bindings menu of the controller, You then look for the guide button picture, select it and change it to Nothing from the bottom of the drop down menu. Click Apply and then Ok.

If you wish to EDIT the bindings, if something doesn't feel right to you, that's completely okay - please be sure to comment any suggestions that worked better for you, so I can collate and update it to be better for everyone.

Binding-edit instructions below

4. The bindings for Rimworld will show up for you in CC when you open the game up AFTER you have 'Controller Companion' opened and running on your desktop. If you can't see Rimworlds icon show up in the Profiles menu, under 'Process Bindings', load Rimworld and then go back to Controller Companion. You are then able to customize it..
5. Click the Rimworld icon, and select Edit.
6. You will now see a whole list of bindable buttons! ...Do so and experiment at your own risk.

Let me know what you think of this set up, and if any suggestions, please comment below! Thank you.

I am having trouble understanding your instructions for how to set it up properly. How do I disable the Big Picture utilisation of the guide button? I cannot find such an option to perform step 2) , and I am unsure what you mean by choosing 'Profiles' in step 3). Pictures would be very helpful I think, thank you for your help!

Thank you, Booser. Let me know how it goes. I’m always open to improvements.

I figured it out. For anyone else with the same problem You have to edit the Rimworld profile in CC and go to profile and make sure the process name matches the .exe file where your Rimworld is installed. Mine was missing the 64 in 'RimWorldWin64.exe"

Rimworld doesn't want to let me use the custom controls. It disables controller companion it by default, and reverts to desktop controls when I forcibly turn CC back in mid game.

@chelios

Add my Steam and I’ll send you my personal file, and see if it helps you.

Hey, running it outside of Steam leads to the same result. I know Steam isn't contributing because the game warns me that Steam isn't going to record my achievements when I attempt to run the game. The Rimworld profile never seems to take over. I'm confused about why I can't simply right-click a profile and set it as my current button scheme. That said, I set up a few of the default bindings. I can pause, left- and right-click on the fly without upsetting the default bindings, while still being fully capable of playing the game. I could easily map the defaults out for Rimworld, if I so desire, too.

Either way, I can play the game with my controller, no problem (a bit slower and unintuitively), thanks to CC. So thank you so much for bringing it to my attention!

I'll be adding PS4 controller support ASAP.

@Chelios - Let me know what controller you're using, also try disabling Steam as it can revert settings to steam defaults, launch the game outside of Steam. Get back to me if you try this.
Chelios Jan 11, 2021 @ 7:20am
SOTHPARK, it's because CC defaults to disabling your controller any time you enter full screen. You have to hold Back and then hit the Start button. You can use this button combination on any screen to activate or deactivate your controller (while you're running Controller Companion).

Neckbeard, I got my controller to work in the game, but the Rimworld Bindings don't seem to take over. It uses my Desktop bindings even though I can click the Rimworld profile and edit freely. Any ideas? Appreciate your work on this. I want to play and love this game but there's too much clicking for my wrists to put up with, these days.
