Accordingly to this new science, people born in a specific area can have access to a series of benefits bounded to what we call "citizenship".
Sometimes in past, people that was conquered by foreign powers was granted citizenship to... like, in this example, the Greeks with ROMAN citizenship.
Now, returning to the topic, Greeks ethnic group but Roman by the law.
It was the same for Hispanics, North Africans, Egyptians, French, Italians etc. All Romans.
Its more clear to you? Because... I am Roman. This is something MY people created through time.Understood?
Read what is written here on the coin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_John_VIII_Palaeologus#/media/File:Pisanello,_medaglia_di_giovanni_paleologo,_I_esemplare_del_bargello.JPG
It's written Ρωμαιων and not Ελληνων we do agree? :)
On coins of the Palaiologos period it's written "autokrator twn romaion" not "autokrator twn ellinwn" ;)
They were Romans, or the Eastern Roman Empire.
Most of them were "Greek" especially during the last centuries as the empire was smaller, concentrated around Greece.
But they were Romans, as a state, even if they spoke Greek.
Autokratoria ton Romaion (in Greek) stands for "Kingdom/Empire of the Romans"
Hope it help :)
