Stop ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about real weapons in TF2
Now, we have an acutal reason not to ♥♥♥♥♥ about real life weapons being in TF2. And it's name is The AWPer Hand...

The AWP is a real gun. So why would you barf at the idea of an AK for the sniper, an incendiary Olympia for the Pyro, or a Modified M1 Garand/Gewher 43 hybrid for the Soldier? It's rediculous, you must admit. Go watch the second Matrix movie (at your own risk, of course) and you'll see the lady in the white dress has a Peppergun, similar to the Shortstop! So SHUT UP about "real weapons making TF2 like CoD." Because they aren't, couldn't, wouldn't, and won't. Torcher's Twinbarrel and Makeshift Mauser FTW.

Well if basing weapons off of real weapons is not okay, then we better get rid of these (not counting melee weapons)
1. Shortstop (modified COP .357 derringer loaded with shot)
2. Pistol (Walther PPK)
3. Lugermorph (Luger P08)
4. Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol (Colt 1908 Vest Pocket Pistol)
5. Rocket Launcher/Jumper (RPG-7)
6. Black Box (M202 FLASH)
7. Liberty Launcher (M1 Bazooka)
8. Shotgun (Ithaca M37)
9. Flare Gun
10. Grenade Launcher (Milkor MGL with stylistic elements from M79)
11. Loch and Load (more directly from M79)
12. Brass Beast (Gatling Gun)
13. Tomislav (Thompson Machine Gun)
14. Huo-Long Heater (M1919)
15. Family Business (Benelli M3 Super 90)
16. Frontier Justice (Mossberg 500)
17. Sniper Rifle (M40)
18. AWPer hand
19. Bazaar Bargain (Jezail)
20. Hitman's Heatmaker (WA2000 and VSS Vintorez)
21. SMG (the wiki says MAT-49 but that appears to be the old design, this one is more MP-40ish)
22. Cleaner's Carbine (Mp5)
23. Revolver (Colt Diamondback)
24. L'Etranger (Nagant M1895)
25. Enforcer (Taurus .357 Magnum)
26. Diamondback (a douchebag 1990's futurism-styled Colt Diamondback)

So yeah, let's get rid of all those. Small price to pay not to rage at the AWP in another game, right?

(What? It doesn't get instant one-hit kills from an instant potshot anywhere on the body in this game? Then it's hardly a real AWP, now, is it?)

But here's something folks are really stupid about:

"Hey, let's add an AK47 for the soldier!"

Do they make a stylized, appropriate, good-looking thing that makes some damn sense? No, they submit a COD styled realistic weapon.

Look at all the ones I listed above: they're all stylized renditions of the things they're based off of. Some things, like the SMG, are far removed from their original base material, others like the Tomislav are really only making a stylistic nod at the item they're based off of.

Stop submitting stuff looking exactly like it does in real life. TF2 is a stylized, cartoonish, comic-book type environment, and putting your absurdly detailed M4 carbine with laser scope and grenade launcher in there looks as stupid in actuality as the badly cropped image you submitted it with.

I don’t think people actually complain about this. The problem isn’t real world vs completely fictional it is about the design and feel of the weapon. People don’t want AK-47, AWP, and other real weapons in the game, not because they are real, but because most AK-47 and other popular real weapons made into TF2 models are designed poorly. Also, many popular real guns are so common in other shooters it would pull many player out of the TF2 world. Uncommonness, design/ stylization, and time appropriateness are the important factors when it comes to TF2 models, not whether it is from the real world or not, and the most popular real guns break these rules often.

So the problem with the AWP is not that it is real, but that it is poorly designed and not stylized well, it looks (and is) modern, and it is the kind of gun you’d see in a typical FPS. It doesn’t feel like it belongs in TF2. Of course not every weapon in the game follows these rules, but they follow at least one to a satisfactory degree. This is just an opinion, but important part is that the realness of the gun is not a factor in that opinion and most opinion about the quality of a weapon in the game dont have realness as a factor. People don’t care about whether a weapon is real or not.

I am personally pretty disappointed with how promo items get a pass on sodomizing the style so much.
Splosion 2012 年 8 月 28 日 上午 12:37
If you want an AK-47, go play ANY other shooter ever made. The only reason the AWP got a pass was because it was very limited promotional item for a Valve game. If it was submitted from another publisher I promise you Valve would have shot down that promo instantly.

Yes we COULD have real weapons made in the art style of TF2 but SHOULD we? No. Tell me which class could have a fully automatic rifle handed to them and be balanced? Most real world weapons just do not fit into the grand scheme of balance TF2 has. If you want more realism then why on earth even pick up this game?
RetroMike 109 2012 年 8 月 28 日 上午 4:24
I could care less if a real weapon is in the game, as long as it's been modeled and textured to fit the art style. In fact I'm OK with almost anything going in as long as it looks like it was made with TF2 in mind. My Scout set is a little futuristic but I tired hard to keep with the art style at least.
