Summary
Gothic 1 Remake features locked chests scattered across the Old Camp, New Camp, and Swamp Camp, each holding loot ranging from Ore Nuggets and crafting materials to quest-critical items like Scatty's Ring and Kalom's Recipe. Every chest requires a lockpick and a working knowledge of the game's slider-based lockpicking system, where each plate must be centered by solving a chain of linked movements. Whether you're looting for survival, completing a quest, or just being thorough, knowing where the chests are and when to approach them saves you time and lockpicks.
What are these chests & how do they work?
Chests in Gothic 1 Remake are locked containers placed throughout the Colony, inside NPC huts, faction buildings, and hidden corners of the world map. Some belong to specific characters and hold quest items. Others are just there waiting for someone with the nerve and the lockpicks to open them.

To open any locked chest, you need at least one Lockpick in your inventory. Interact with the chest and the lockpicking interface opens. You are looking at a set of plates, anywhere from five to six depending on the chest's complexity. Each plate has seven holes. Your job is to move every golden pin into the center hole at the same time.

The tricky part is that moving one plate often shifts others. The connections between plates change depending on the chest, so there is no universal solution that works everywhere. Each lock is its own logic puzzle. Once you understand that the system follows fixed rules with no random elements, it gets readable. You stop guessing and start solving.

Trainer Shortcut: Remove Both Failure States
A broken lockpick means starting over, and a real-time clock means an NPC can catch you mid-puzzle. Unlimited Lockpicks takes the first problem off the table, and Freeze Time takes care of the second.

Two things to keep in mind. First, if the pin reaches the edge of a plate during lockpicking, you break the lockpick and have to start over with a new one. Second, the game does not pause while you are picking. NPCs can catch you mid-lock, and that can go badly depending on who owns the chest.

Train your lockpicking skill from Fingers, whose hut sits between Scatty's place and the castle wall in the Old Camp's arena district, just past Snaf's cooking cauldron on the left slope. At 10 Learning Points and 100 Ore Nuggets, the upgrade is not cheap, but it lets you make up to four mistakes before a lockpick breaks, and it stops your progress from resetting when one does snap. Worth it.

Trainer Shortcut: Cover Fingers' Price Tag
The lockpicking upgrade runs 10 Learning Points and 100 Ore Nuggets before you've opened a single chest with it. Use Add Learning Points and Add Ore Nuggets to cover both at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What do chests contain in Gothic 1 Remake?
  • Chests hold a range of loot including Ore Nuggets, raw crafting materials like Steel and Ruby, consumables like Essence of Healing, Lockpicks, food items, and in some cases unique quest items like Scatty's Ring or Kalom's Recipe that cannot be obtained any other way.
Q. How do I get lockpicks in Gothic 1 Remake?
  • Mordrag sells Lockpicks for 13 Ore Nuggets each and Dexter sells them for around 15, both located in the Old Camp marketplace. Lockpicks also turn up in loot chests and scattered around the world, though those drops are not guaranteed.
Q. Is it worth upgrading the lockpicking skill in Gothic 1 Remake?
  • Yes, especially if you plan to open multiple chests across the Colony. The upgrade from Fingers in the Old Camp allows up to four mistakes per lockpick instead of two, stops progress from resetting on a broken pick, and simplifies complex locks by removing one plate connection.
Q. Do NPCs react if they catch you opening a chest?
  • Yes. The game runs in real time during lockpicking, so nearby NPCs can catch you in the act. Depending on who owns the chest and what faction territory you are in, getting caught can trigger combat or a hostile response from guards.
Q. Can every chest in Gothic 1 Remake be lockpicked?
  • Not all of them. Some chests require a specific key rather than a lockpick. If a chest does not respond to picking in either direction, a key is what opens it. That key usually belongs to a quest or a specific NPC in the area.
Q. What is the easiest chest to open early in Gothic 1 Remake?
  • Diego's Chest near the Old Camp castle gate is a common first attempt because it's accessible early and the loot is practical, particularly the three Lockpicks inside which help fund further chest runs.
Optional Trainers (Use Responsibly)
If navigating the lockpicking system is frustrating or certain chests feel impossible to reach on your own, Wand has a set of tools that can fill the gap. These are especially useful if you're playing with limited mobility, want to reduce repetitive puzzle sequences, or just want to see the content without the friction.

Spawn Keys lets you generate the keys needed for locked doors and quest-specific containers that cannot be lockpicked. If a chest requires a key tied to a quest you don't want to do or can't complete, this skips that barrier entirely.

Spawn Unique Items generates legendary items and quest-focused stones directly into your inventory. If the loot inside a specific chest is what you're after and the lockpicking system is getting in the way, this bypasses the whole process.

Save Location lets you mark your current position in the world. Before attempting a risky chest in enemy territory, saving your spot means you don't have to retrace a long path if something goes wrong.

Teleport to Saved Location works alongside Save Location and sends you directly back to wherever you marked. Useful when a chest run goes wrong mid-way and you want to reset without manual backtracking.
