Alternatively, or even additionally to what I wrote below, the blue beam suggests a more kritzkrieg-ish uniqueness. What if the medigun sacrifices some or all overheal for increased healing speed depending on how low the person you are healing is.

What if the medigun functioned mostly the same as other mediguns, but the ubercharge was an aoe healing where your medibeam attaches to all your allies in range and can overheal alongside the medic getting more passive healing. This would make it so the medic doesn’t really pocket as much and encourage people stay near the medic even more, which could either increase or decrease, depending on what classes you’re fighting, the medic’s chances of surviving. Basically, you get the amputator’s benefits without the big flashing neon sign that says, “SPIES, PLEASE KILL ME”
