Some of the houses that come with hearthfire dlc are much better in fact

No, just travel to the castle and it'll already act as an owned home. The purpose of this is supposed to be an open castle that is owned by Skyrim's heroes (the Dragonborn in this case). The player is marked as the owner so no one will be hostile and you can freely store things in the chest in the bedroom.

There is a large chest in the main bedroom in the upstairs that doesn't respawn and should have unlimited space.

Could you please tell me how much storage space available and what kind. I'm a horder lol.
