That marsh was one of those things I really wanted to have in my map as a nice and easy to implement eyecandy.
I really enjoyed the marsh to the east of the map. When I finally developed out that way it was a very nice backdrop.
Back in the day those ramps had to be so deep because otherwise the bridges wouldn't work out and I really wanted those ramps :D. I'm not sure if that has changed since and I bet there are more eye pleasing ways to do the same thing today.
Yeah, I made that gulley with small roads in mind (same for the hillside) as I never really envisioned the starting area to be huge city center but more like a small village among others around the map. The hillside though has caused me quite a lot of trouble in my game.
I planned this map for a countryside region with small roads and villages among farms and forests. Better shown in here:

I just made this map for personal use at first as I really wanted certain type of map to play around, but thought why not just publish it for the others too.
And thanks, hope you had a great summer too :)
@Arty: Just 100% vanilla map editor. :) I had few features in mind that I wanted to have (coastline, mountains, lake, crater and swamps) and I made a rough map with those in place. Then I begun to plan smaller features like rivers, canyons, etc. After that I went trough the whole map, smoothing it out and adding small features. Last part was to add resources like forests, arid land, etc. and transportation networks.
@Jones: Thanks, that's the feeling I wanted for this map. :)
@Eldrarak1982: Good to hear you enjoy it, and I always appreciate feedback :) Yeah those underpasses would be probably much easier to do with the tunnel tool these days, it was kind of a workaround at the time without tunnels. :D
I'll be amazed if it's 100% the vanilla map editor!
Is it a serious edit of a real heightmap? An amalgamation of several? What software was your workhorse? Photoshop/gimp maybe? Or perhaps you used a terrain/heightmap editor like wilbur?
Thanks!
And btw if you could suggest any other maps that follow this theme it would be great :)
Easiest way to change the map to another theme would be to take the height map from this and start working from there. It would still be a lot of work, as you would still have to add water spawners, animal spawners, forests, sand, resources, plane & ship -lines, roads and rails.
I'm not a fan of how CO locked the European buildings to only European themed maps and I really hope they will either change that or some mod will allow European buildings on other themes too.
I'll be away for the whole summer starting next Monday so unfortunately I don't have the time to convert this to European theme :/
@Greesygun: Have a good time populating it!
I'll see if I can change the off-ramps to a longer and less steep versions during the weekend.
Btw, "Schwarze Kluft" means black chasm. I think it's a fitting name for that oil field. ;-)

A third pump will dry out the river. I have two more pumps at the other river.
In the end I thought that I would just use coastline or small lakes as my water pumping for the very reason you brought up as I made those river primary for the looks.
How is it with over 20k pop as the most I ever tested was about 9k?
What I don't like are the small rivers in the center. They just don't have that much water. 2-4 water pumps can easily dry them up. You really have to make sure to have some suitable water sources in reach when hitting about 20-25k citizens.
Maybe you can put a stronger current into the rivers? That way they don't dry up so fast and allow a sensible use of dams near or at the waterfalls.
@meredith93: Thanks! You are going to find a lot of space for farming and forestry.
@Botch: Thank you for your kind words :) Took quite a lot of time to make this map (and mainly made it for my personal use) so it's great to see others enjoying it too.
Thank you for this. It is as close to a perfect map that I think I will ever play during this game's run. It is in everyone's best interest to experience this map. If you're remotely hesitant, just give it a 5 minute trial. My opinion only cheapens this work, but it had to be expressed. React accordingly and appropriately.
