on my ships and so far the turret seems to only get knocked out when the ship is pretty much dead anyway... simple put, if you sue the 'imbedded-tower' desighn i mentioned is already super safe as the rotor is normally below deck...
as you cna see ont he ship in the link there is no spacing ebtween the armore attached ot the SIDES of the rotor (yes, you cna do that, i was suprised when i found out) and the deck the rotor is attched to.... meaning it is almost immune to shrapnet( although shrapnel in large quanteties glitched through 3 layers fo metal armore wihtought damagingn ti and blows up ammo laods on some of my ships for reason unkown, but this is uncommon).
For the cannons the internal mechanism method is my preferred as heavy upper armor is key, the main tradeoff for this ship however is that the forward turrets workings are super vulnerable to attack with is not good, that said me and 7th fleet have been talking about methods on improving survivability of turrets on my next build you'll see what i've come up with :D
alos, do those guns dig into the hull? (as in, the turret istelf is actually ona tower hidden belwo the hull) as thats a bit mroe realistic, and alows for supirior firepower when you want to haeva smaler profile for the ship. ive used this in/hull turret method on many fo my ships and it works great... and if the hole in the hull is above water and the turret chamber is seales then you can place an airpump in there to help counter the extra waight of a bigger gun.
the interior will allow you to have a natural buyency if you will ti wiht airpumps, so youll only realy loose buynecy where the walls to the interior are (unless there alloy) and bets of all, if price isnt a conser, then full the air chambers wiht glass, as it floats better the a room with an airpumpo in it, but costs considerably more....
However that may be a good thing as i plan on going through this and replacing all non essential metal with alloy to reduce the weight somewhat.
If you have time you may see this in 7th fleets midway competition, it likely won't get far but still :P https://www.youtube.com/user/Minecraft7thfleet
I've got a few more Royal Navy ships in the immediate future for release although they may seem similar as British Destroyers looked very similar in those years they will have some interesting features i'm trying out!.
