The W looks a lot like an N when it is mirrored. If you were to fiddle with the W and N a little more, I bet your could get them to look pretty convincing mirrored.

1) Yes, this is neccessary evil. If I had my hands free, I'd quack it all over.

Firstly, your "N" is going to be backwards on the starboard side of the vessel. Secondly, I do not believe you can draw circles that well free-hand. Thirdly, your duck is anatomically incorrect. And lastly, you're a duck.
