Combat is tight and challenging on even normal difficulty, and the weapon changes provide more depth from how much of the vanilla arsenal just could not give.
Now the atmosphere comes from the analog aesthetic, level design, terminal writing, and the music. The music does most of the heavy lifting in the atmosphere department by weaving a pervasive undertone of looming dread while playing.
I have not quite had an experience quite like this and I'd recommend this if you want a challenge, several lessons in game development, or simply just to play more Marathon.
