Basically pay them to do it for you. One user on steam with a bunch of good looking portrait mods that takes commisions last I checked is Etiluos. No clue how one would go about that though so whoever goes that route is on their own unfortunately, but it is a option.
yes, they are a machine race, you can tell because when you try to mod them they should only connect with other robot portraits. it is either stellaris or another mod causing those events as far as i can tell
