If it's colonial it goes: Independent => Chartered Company or Dominion => Colony => Annexation
If it's non colonial: Independent => Protectorate => Puppet => Annexation
If you yourself are unrecognized, your subject will be: Independent => Tributary => Vassal => Annexation
Not sure how colonial vs non-colonial/Chartered Company or Dominion are determined though.
