I think sulfur is upside down because it's a devil item, like the opposite of good. But i don't know the true reason so maybe it's a mistake fr.

to my understanding, the symbol brimstone (the item) uses is for an alchemical compound, possibly black sulphur. The upright triangle-cross thing is used for sulphur as an element.
fun fact! the symbol used for brimstone (the item) is also known as the leviathan cross or satan's cross
