Thanks Hotwheels25372 for linking this documentary.
I remember watching a short news flick on German television of the Flying Scotsman's return home to England and her reception there. I remember thinking along the lines 'So what?' - I loved steam locomotives (which boy doesn't?) but Diesels were soooo much better, lol.
I actually could compare, since I was on what must have been one of the last regular steam services in the mid- to late 60ies in Bavaria at 5 years for a short trip, and then again at 8 years on a Diesel powered service. Less noise, less smell, smoother operation and faster. Steamers were more impressive, but Diesels were 'better', I proclaimed.
My father told me then what an icon and how famous the Flying Scotsman is, and that she had been already famous when he was a young boy himself for her speed (she could go faster than our car!) and reliability.
Now I’m approaching 60 and that locomotive is still operational – what a Grand Old Masterpiece!

I wonder if we could ever have Southern Pacific 4449 make a tour of the UK in a similar fashion? Though I'm not sure if it would be compatible with the loading gauge.

Still think it was awesome how they sent Pegler on his way when he passed. Great model, btw.

Thanks so much Steve - I'm going to enjoy this.

Thanks to you too hotwheels for linking that doc. I really enjoyed watching that - an incredible (and well told) story. Alan Pedler though... aw man, you've just got to admire his boyish adventurism and the "lets just do it" attitude. Despite it ruining him, he never had a single regret.

Yeah I get the feeling I'm not the only one who saw Unlucky Tug's video on the FS' USA tour. Nice to see her getting some attention again.
